Phillip,

Got your link. It was everything I needed to know! Amazing job by Trevor. The man is a saint.

I just went out and crawled under the car with a flashlight, sure enough, my '98 Contour has the old sensor.

Thanks for helping me out. I really appreciate it.

I can tell you I was having the same hard type slip bang shift from 1st to 2nd gear. I went and picked up the improved speed sensor and installed it today on my 95 Mystique. What a huge differance it makes now...smooth as a kitten shifts!!! really suprised me the improvement it made.
Be cautous taking it out...just spray it good with wd40 or something, grab the plug end with a vise grip and twist it side to side, slowly, slowly and pulling out pressure at same time. With taking the extra time, I got it out without
breaking it off. Tapped the new one in with the handle side of a plastic screwdriver and hammer slowly and oiled it and it was done in about 15mins, in and out. I thought my tranny was on its way out...but yep, that baby fixed my problems for sure!

Mine is a 95 Mystique, with 85,000km. I don't know how anyone could say its rusted...the thing is plastic coated. Its just that its a very tight fit, as is the new one. Just spray it good, grip the outside of the plug head and turn it left and right, left and right until its able to spin 360 in the hole...then slowly turn it as you spray and pulling and turning. It has an o-ring that keeps it tight fitting. The new one will just tap in with something other than steel. If you try to force it too soon it might break, just work it slow. BTW, its $40.00 at the stealership (In the almighty Canadian $$$ ) LOL

It should be no big deal to just remove the outer cover bolts and take the cover off, then knock it from the inside out. May have to drain oil though...not sure on that. But have a look and you will see, the cover is only about 10 9mm bolts to take off.

Hello,

Will replacing the TSS cure recurring CEL P1744 codes?

I had the CEL P1744 and had the Torque Converter and Toque Converter Selenoid Modulator Valve(?) replaced. 13000 miles later (that's 1000 miles over the dealers repair warranty) I have the same problem.

I was wondering if the something as simple as replacing the TSS will fix the "1-2 Shift-Bang" that is being attributed to the P1744.

I'm not in the mood to shell out another $1000 Plus to have the whole thing replaced again.

P1744 - TCC(Torque Convertor Clutch) - Excessive slip detected - Excessive slip detected during full TCC engagement - Torque converter disengaged. EPC pressure at minimum. May activate MIL.

Andy, this is what the Ford service manual has to say about your 1744 code. I know it all to well.

Try running down the road at a speed of around 55 MPH and hold that speed. While continueing to hold the gas pedal, press on the brake pedal and hold it down. You should see the enigne's RPM's rise about 250-500 RPMs. If you don't see this, then your Torque Convertor is not locking. If you do see the this change, then you need to check your Solenoid block connector color. If you have a 95, then it should be black, and if it is a 96 or newer, it should be beidge/tan. If this does not match up, then you have the wrong solenoid block in your car. That is what happened to me.
