I purchased this car used and then the tranny started acting up. (So much for used cars!) Anyway, it shifts funny from 1st to 2nd. It either "slips" or shifts hard. I already replaced the VSS. I have read in other places that this tranny (CD4E) is controlled by the car's computer and is prone to electrical "issues." Can somebody tell me an accurate way to diagnose? You know if you take it to some transmission shop they are going to want to "swap it out" to the tune of $2,500.00 or so. PLEASE HELP GUYS!!!

Doesn't sound good. What color is the ATF? Bright red/pink or brown?

Ford (and some home scanners) can monitor transmission functions while driving on 96 and up.
If the engine is having issues, look for vacuum leaks and check the TPS. They can affect shift feel and timing.

Are you getting any cell codes? Cheapest thing to do at this point, I would recommend to install a Transgo Shift Kit. You do not need to pull the transmission. You need to remove the valve body which can be done in the car. the kit is about 30 dollars at www.bulkparts.com. If this doesn't solve your problem then it may be time for a rebuild.

There is also an issue called the 1-2 "Bang shift". You pull out from a side street & let off the gas just a bit - BANG it hammers into 2nd. A little part called a TSS (Turbine Speed Sensor) should fix this problem. There are posts & How-to instructions available. Costs maybe $20, takes about 5 minutes if you're handy - 15 if you're not. A few have had difficulty removing the old part because of rust, so you might want to take it to a shop to have it replaced since you have an older model.
Is your "slipping" happening in reverse 1st thing in the morning? Does the slip go away once the tranny has warmed up a bit? If so, do the valve body thing as stated in the above post.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Please! Where can I find more info on this...
"A little part called a TSS (Turbine Speed Sensor) should fix this problem. There are posts & How-to instructions available."
A bang between 1st and 2nd on deceleraton describes my problem exactly. I can't find anything about TSS or How-to's with my web searches.
Please help if you can.
I want to do this myself if I can. Where is it located? Does Ford have a replacement? Do I just take off the old and put on a new one?
Thanks for the hint on where to start.
Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for the replys. I had the transmission fluid changed recently, it wasn't that bad. I am not getting any CEL codes either. The problem seems to be getting worse. I will try the valve body thing.
Thanks! The car does not slip in reverse. I am familiar with the bang shift thing, it happened on my other Contour,I looked at the Ford Mondeo site, and it said something about a "Multiplug" on the transmission. Do the Contours have these?

What year model tour do you have?
The "multiplug" they are talking about, might be the MLP sensor, aka range senor, or the solenoid block.
It is possible, that if this only happens in shifts between 1st-2nd, then you might have a problem with a sticking piston in the valve body that controls this shift. If this is the case, only thing you can do is replace the valve body or have it completely rebuilt. There was a place were some guys purchused rebuilt valve bodys, that had Sonnax valves, for around $250. What was the name of that place??
I would try the TSS first, I guess, since it is not has evasive. Then I would check out the valve body. Keep us updated.

The car is a '98 with the V6. The problem started all of a sudden. I have owned three other Contours, and when I test drove this one it was fine. It has only 56,000 documented miles, so I am thinking it is perhaps electrical. I called one shop and they sa id they can "SCAN" the transmission. Will this narrow the issue(s)?
