Hi,
I recenlty downloaded Mandrake 9.2 ISOs and I'm having trouble getting X to start.
I tested 9.1 and no problem, but 9.2 on two PCs having the same problem. Can't start the video mode.
I haven't got the messages of what the problem is, but is strange because I always had Mandrake running the video mode with the default config from installation.
Any one knows of any bug?

Some things which may help... 1. Try reinstalling, choosing upgrade, not install (goes fairly fast) and when you get to the summary screen choose to edit both the monitor and the vid card and select the most appropriate one from the list and test various resolutions before finishing the installation. If your monitor is not in the list, choose a generic one with your max resolution. If your garphics card is not listed, choose "SVGA"... you can install specific drivers later. 2. If you have an nvidia geforce card and have installed nvidia's drivers... First login as root and type 'modprobe nvidia'... if no error is shown then 'logout', login as your normal user and type 'startx' to see if X starts. Also check the file '/etc/modules.conf' for a line that says 'alias /dev/nvidia* nvidia' and add it if necessary. Also add the word 'nvidia' to the file '/etc/modules' There is one more option which I am forgetting for automatically doing 'modprobe nvidia' at boot time... I'll have to research that.... I'm a semi-newbie at Linux. 3. If you have an ATI card or other card there are probably similar steps to take, but I don't know the module names.
If you do get X to start, go to the Mandrake Control Center - Hardware - Graphical server settings choose 'options' and select to automatically start at boot.

Oh yeah... if using an nvidia card, make sure the file '/etc/modprobe.preload' has a line saying 'nvidia'

How is his question about his linux vid probs considered forum spam, especially when posted in the Common Interests forum? Or does he usually spam the forums and I'm not around enough to see it?

I agree, it might be more helpful to post in a Linux/Mandrake forum then the Contour forums...

I agree too, although there are a few linux gurus here,
pabloquintana you might want to check out www.linux.org/forums that place is like CEG for linux, it has info for all the linux distros, if you just want info on mandrake there is also http://www.mandrakeclub.com/modules.php?name=Splatt_Forum which is good.

I agree he should check out the linux forums etc. But... my point was that he posted in 'Common Interests' (off topic)... "For topics not directly Contour/Mystique related." General posts about Contiques obviously should be posted in 'General'. If he had posted his linux questions there that would be another matter. Are we required to make our off-topic posts in the common interests forum somehow relate to our cars? Hehe, that'd be difficult to do sometimes.

Man this is Common Interests. If none here has an interest in Mandrake then, nobody should answer and my post will plunge into the darkness of this forum.
Now, about the above advices, I will try that, but the card I'm trying to get to work is an Intel 815 and I tried SVGA and didn't work, although the installation went fine using the graphical method.
Thanks.
