Wow, I find it strange that I hear the noise described in this thread for the 1st time today and come home to see that its on the front page of the Duratec page! First time I've heard the noise in 92,000 miles. I haven't changed anything at all recently. I did notice right before I heard the whining noise (pulling away fast from a light up through 5,000 rpm's) that my car almost stalled as I slowed to a stop at a previous light. It dropped revs to 200 and seemed to struggle before recovering its idle. Could this be a clue to those out there who know more about these things than me

I beleive the wine I hear is from my timing chains.. it isn't really audible untill high rpms, and definately doesnt sound like the squeel of a bad bearing.

my SVT whistles at part throttle, but its from air going through the throttle body and the sound resonating in my intake pipe. it sounds pretty damn cool IMO. I have fun driving around and seeing how long I can hold the sound, its only certain throttle angles that do it.

yeah, mine does it to, comes from the right side a lot more? I have the Zetec Engine though. Its just the power steering pump, its pretty common on Ford cars, nothings wrong and you have no need to worry about it. All in all, it sounds cool, makes your car sound like its turbocharged

My 97 Contour makes that sound, pretty much all the way through the RPM range... But it's a relatively quiet engine...my friend was riding in it a couple days after I got it, and he agreed that it was really super quiet...and I noticed that I can't rev at anyone in traffic, cause they won't hear me... Maybe that's not such a bad thing... Keep myself out of trouble, hehe.

But yeah, my former car, an 02 ZX2 with Zetec, made that sound at high RPM, and my afformentioned friend who has a 92 Probe, his car makes the same type of sound...though his just sounds like a jet engine, hahaha. Not a bad sound for a Probe on its last legs with an automatic tranny...

So I guess it's common in Fords...

Alright, get this: now my sub is echoing the noise!!! it must be something (alternator?) giving off an electric or magnetic field to have both a whine and an interference with audio equip.

Roz,

I just replaced my serp belt with the Gatorback and now get that whine as you described. Is this normal? Should we be replacing the serp belt with another brand, even OEM? Has anyone replaced their serp belt with a specific brand that DOES NOT produce the high pitch whine? Thanks...

One thing that I did notice was that when I put the new serpentine belt on, the tensioner definately is compressed in more, probably due to it being a new non-stretched belt. Could the new tighter belt have anything to do with it? More pressure on the pullys, etc?

OK, final note - I just replaced the Goodyear Gator Back serp belt with the OEM from Ford and no more whine. Im going to take back the Gator Back. And the OEM belt was only a few bucks more.

Lesson learned: sometimes its better to stick with OEM...
