Well you guys have heard me comment on our "ironman" work van, you know the 97' Safari, well it has finally hit a milestone, 500K! We got this van brand new in January of 98'. For the majority of its life it was run 300 miles a day, but in the last year we've added some stops and now goes 400 miles a day Heres a brief history of its running gear:

-motor is original and has only been opened up once at 100K for a new oil pump, no new bearing!

-transmission is all original and is serviced every 30K by yours truely

-the original w/p lasted 325K, no kidding!

-the original radiator lasted 350K.

The oil is changed once a month and for about 1 1/2 yrs now, I've switched to synthetic w/o a problem Oh I know what your sayin', yeah right, that thing has 500K on it, well heres the proof guys...

Drum roll please...

Also for the record, the van doesn't even smoke when you first start it up either, amazing! I called GM and guess what, they offered me a free oil change I thought they might want to buy it back and see what they did right on this one If you drove it and didn't look at the mileage, you'd have NO idea that it has HALF A MILLION on it This is one reason why I'm a firm believer in preventive maintence

our safari at work just rolled over the 325k mark about 3 months ago. it is much older, and has needed a bit more work than urs, but it is going strong!

Now, I'm not saying this because I work at a GM dealership , but the safari/astro vans are THEE best vans that have ever been out. Reliability is the key factor in those vans, and although they aren't confortable, they won't get you good 1/4 times, and are pretty ugly... they are damn good vans. The astro/safari is the child of the parent Yukon/Suburban, which also says alot since 1974 suburbans still grace us on an everyday basis and the Yukon was just named most reliable truck in the world.

my mom has an astro and she has invested like 3,000 into it trying to keep it running and something always goes wrong with it. I disagree with the fact that that line is well made. I've never seen a car go through so many problems.

Its not about the car.. you can't just go off saying all astro's are amazing, its about how well you can maintain it...

any car can last forever depending on how well you take care of it... I have seen super crappy astro's with tons of problems, and I know a guy who delivers stuff and has like 714,000 km's on it... origional engine...

its all about the owner, not the vehicle
