i might purchase a 1996 ford contour GL. but the seller said the airconditioning doesnt work anymore. would anyone here know why?

Welcome aboard!!!Well, it could be a bad compressor thats leaking which is the most common problem. Also it could be a/c lines could have a leak in it also. If you do get the car, you should go get a pressure tested or you can do it yourself. Check your nearest autoparts store for it.

would it cost me alot of money?

No not really if you buy it yourself from the autoparts store. It comes with the recharge kit. Or you can take an easier route to take it to your mechanic. You better hope its the compressor. I dont know much much they usally charge for the diagnosis.

Bad A/C compressor
Bad high pressure switch
Bad low pressure switch
Fuse blown
(Cabin)Fan switch broken

heat/cold selector broken
Vacuum leak in Heater / A/C module
Damper actuactor broken
Damper Actuator disconnected
Serpentine belt missing
Serpentine belt broken
The Car doesn't have A/C and the owner didn't know it

These are not in any particular order.

I might of missed one or two, but it is probably one of these issues.
