I just bought a 96 contour GL off ebay for a great price. It needs a little bit of work for the most part cause it sat for like 18mos. The car has 110K miles but he replaced the engine and tranny cause it had a tranny leak and was able to find one and the engine came with it. Now for my questions. Fortunately I was able to test drive the car before I bid on it and noticed some problems. One being with the tranny, it shifts fine under normal acceleration but when you go to wot it downshifts but then doesn't really want to go. If feels like something is holding it back. IF you downshift at half throttle it's fine but the minute you floor it it doesn't want to move. So I'm not sure if it's an actual tranny problem or some type of sensor. Also the car has a very ruff idle and the cel is on. Right now it's at my mechanics place getting a complete tune up and then he will pull the code and let me know what it is. I'm hoping the tune-up and/code takes car of the idle and hopefully it's not a huge tranny job. Like I said the tranny shifts fine under normal conditons so I don't think it's anything major. I'm looking foward to all your opinons. I'm sure I will be here alot and glad to be here.

I just got my car back from my mechanic. The codes were bank 1 lean so he cleaned the egr valve and the mass air and it solved just about everything. no power loss anymore and the ruff idle is just about gone. There's still a ruff idle but no where near as bad as it was but it's still noticable and was wondering what else could be causing the ruff idle? It just had a complete tune-up(wires,plugs,pcv,etc,etc) any help would be appreciated.

well you cleaned the EGR valve and the MAF, but did you really do a good job, it make it idle bettery, but still rough????/ did you know that a car that is running smooth and you take off the vacuum hose to the EGR and then pull a vacuum on the EGR that it will idle rough and then kill???
this might be your problem you cleaned off the EGR, but it cleared up some of the rough idle, but it still might need more cleaning or even a new EGR??? try cleaning it again and this time pull a vacuum though it a few time to get the valve to open and close while off the car and the cleaning agent running though the dirty/carbonized valve...maybe this is all that is needed????

The IAC (Idle Air Control) Valve is often a suspect for rough idle. It's bolted up to your upper intake manifold just like your EGR. Clean and/or replace it, and that should help.

I'm gonna replace the IAC. I'm new to the maintence of contours so I have a couple of questions. Where EXACTLY is the IAC? What tools do i need ot replace it and how long does it generally take?

Idle air controler plugs right into your stock air box(duratec) will take about 5 seconds to replace

With the Winter weather up here it's been a while since I've been under the hood, but believe you are talking about the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor.

Correct, IAC is on underside of the intake manifold.

My father and I just spent an 1 1/2 hrs. replacing the IAC and the damn thing still stalls on cold start up and still has a very bad idle. Again the car just had a full tune-up,mass air was cleaned, and egr was cleaned and now we replaced the IAC and still the same thing. I'm gonna bring to ford tommorrow but was wondering what other things it might be?
