I have looked for an answer on this site with no luck. I have a 99 mystique 2.5 auto that has less that 24k on it. Last week the CEL light came on. I took it to the dealer and for 84 skins they scanned the code. They told me it was a lean bank code. Cool, they reset the light. driving home from the dealer the light appeared again. Yesterday they said a "MAP" sensor code came on. The car is still at the dealer and waiting on the 'next steps'...(the bride is happy - she has an Escape LTD for touring around in - could be an expensive repair!). Too the point.. is this common for different codes to pop up this close together? Does it sound like the dealer is not certain what the problem is? Should this cause me concern? Any insight ?

Welcome to CEG!

The codes are quite possibly related. A MAF code can be generated by contamination of the MAF, a failure of the MAF (rare), or a wiring problem (including corrosion of the connector). Improper signals from the MAF will cause mixture codes, since the MAF has the main control over the mixture.

Let them work on it and see how it does. Get and keep the paperwork. If the paperwork is vague, have them write more detail. Protect yourself!

See if you can get the actual codes (DTC's, or Diagnostic Trouble Codes) that were pulled, and we'll apply the sniff test.

DTC's related to emissions concerns are of the form Pxxxx, where x is a number.

Sounds like yet another P0171/P0174 problem....

Lots of them lately as these cars age..

Hope the dealership doesn't waste too much time and your money in fixing it...

Thanks for the feedback folks. The car is still at the dealership and no news today. Thankfully I bought the Xtended-warranty for the car on the third anniversary - good through 09/06. Will get a list of the codes and post - I will compare them to the ones posted on the site already to see if it makes sense. I am away on holidays until Wednesday....guess the stique ain't coming!

Good News...I think!

Finally got the car back from the dealership on Tuesday and here is the final outcome of the CEL problem and their diagnostics.

I will post the codes when the dealer gets them to me - my bride picked the car up while I was out of town this week.

So far, the dealer changed the mass airflow, one of the O2 sensors, replaced the intake manifold gasket, and change the car's computer on Ford's advice. I am told they have over $3500 cdn into the repair.

So far no CEL light and I am told that it runs better than new.

Thanks for all the help guys!

Dan
