I do not think the sepratists have any history like this. My money is on militant Islam..big surprise. So very sad...Spain has really stood with us. I feel like they must have on 9/11.

Well, I agree with that. We??ll have to see how the evidence plays out, but it does seem like something related to the militant Islamic terrorists. Hopefully, this will bring some increased pressure to bare hunting them down. This is not something that should be investigated and responded to like an ordinary crime. It??s a military threat and needs to be responded to with (more) military action.
Terrorists are pretty good at taking down women and children (civilians) when they are completely unprepared for it. But they fare much worse when facing trained soldiers. I love it when we see reports of terrorists trying to ??flank? American Special Forces in the mountainous regions of Afghanistan and/or Pakistan. When the firefight ends, they??re all or mostly dead.
Fighting with trained soldiers is a good way to keep them occupied. The more military targets made available for Al Quida, the better it is. The real problem, however, is where they try to blend in with the civilian population and force civilian casualties. I guess that??s why it??s so crucial to stop the infiltration of terrorists into Iraq right now. I read in USA Today that the border is something like 503 miles and only marked by a large sand berm. And small groups of eight can regularly make the crossing.
It??s a complex situation and it seems likely that Spain is being punished for it??s support of the US.
Sincerely,
Scott

The reason they were blaming the Basque nutjobs is because there's an election scheduled here in a few days. IIRC, Al Queda didn't have a history of highjacking American airplanes before 9/11...

That groups can change.. just because the nutjobs haven't done stuff like this in the past doesn't mean they won't do something completely different in the future...
CNN is now saying that the Spanish authorities are placing the blame on ETA, but still looking in to Arabic and Islamic links.
911 days after 9/11/01 = 3/11/04.. odd tidbit I saw posted somewhere.

Well, the thing is for Europe at least, terrorism has been part of daily life for a long time. IRA/INLA/UVF/UFF/ETA/November 17/Red Brigades etc have been terrorizing Europe for years albeit generally not on the scale of the 9/11 attacks.
Most of these groups have been quiet(er) for the last while until yesterday. Maybe it was Al Qaeda, who knows ?
As someone who was on a train once myself that had a bomb on it, yesterday was not a good day.

It will be interesting to see Spain's reaction to this, if it turns out to be Islamic or Al Queda linked. I wonder if Spain decides to protect itself and go after Al Queda in it's country or outside its borders, if all thes anti-American countries (ie. France, Germany, Russia) will support them in their dealings??? Its so sad and F'ed up that a group of bastards has to resort to killing innocent people to further their cause, or because they disagree with the morals of a country. When will these terrorists ever learn that they are doing nothing but pissing off more and more people that are going to fight back eventually.

that is the core of the problem - they do not think like you and me. In our minds yes they are doing more harm than good- but in their minds they are doing exactly what they need to and it is good!!
You cannot stop them unless you can teach them and have them LEARN that it is NOT the way to bring about the change they think is needed.
Sad - but true.

i saw this thread and heres my view. the thing that stays with me most about 9/11,apart from watching large planes flying into wtc,was the reaction on the west bank when they heard the news OMFG it was like their team had won the superbowl.how can people react that way ffs? most muslims react with horror, but the fundamentalists are a different breed.apart from the palestinian snafu, they want all unbelievers out of the holy land(saudi),and quite frankly,it'll snow in the sahara 1st. the western alliance must know who the ringleaders are,why not take them for a walk?
