My mom's fuel pump went out in her Mystique today. I plan to tow it home and change it myself, but I have a question: In the Haynes manual, it says there is an access plate in the floor, underneath the rear seat. Get to that, and you can change the pump without pulling the tank. Is this true? More to the point: is this true of '98- '00s?

If you have a late 99 or 00 Contique with the returnless fuel system, it is a little harder. The hole in the floor did not get any bigger, but the fuel pump did. You must open the hole in the floor a bit bigger or you must drop the fuel tank for access. Even if you don't have the returnless system, you may learn something from this FAQ.

Also, it is a big PITA to turn the lock ring off. Be patient, work steadily. I used a hammer and brass drift and slowly, ever so slowly, with light taps, managed to get it off. I tapped lightly all the way around on the raised portion of the ring. You'll see what I mean when you remove the cap under the seat. Don't get too muscular with it.

Aloso, the seat can be a little tricky to pick up and you may break the plastic clip that holds it in. Mine was already broken by the alarm installer. I didn't know until I went to repair my pump.

Also, get a new o-ring for the access hole. The original one will br stretched and won't fit back in. The O-Ring on mine was green colored, if it matters. I repaired mine but you have to know how to do this. WE have o-ring repair kits at work. I recommend a new o-ring.

Mission accomplished! I dug into it yesterday, and it took me all of thirty minutes to change it out! And to think Reynolds Ford in East Moline wanted $250 for labor alone. That translates into $500/hour. And they know about pulling it from the top, too.

i had to replace my fuel pump in my 99 tour. The hole under the seat was to small so i had to drop the tank. Worst job ever. Everything was in the way. I finally got it out and fixed it and now i have another problem. When i fill my tank up with gas it leaks out the filler neck hole on the gas tank. I dont understand because i completely wiped the seal and the hole in the tank completely clean. Any ideas?

You may have to bite the bullit and drop the tank again to get it on correctly.

If you ever need to do the pump again, just cut the sheet metal under the seat. I cut 4 lines (radial) and bent up the metal. Bent it back down when finished and used duct tape to seal it.
