Does anyone know if the stock HU unite can be run without the AMP if I have the premium sound package?

I guess the problem is figuring out if ford would install two amps (one built in to the HU, one for the premium sound) in our cars. Chances are, they didn't. The main amp might be our ONLY amp.

However, I really don't know, just making a guess here. Ford might not be smart enough to fit an amp in with their tape/cd players.

But why would you want to do that anyway? unless you're planning on replacing your factory deck with an aftermarket HU and using your current ford HU in another car...??

There is only one amp, on the non-premium system, it is in the HU. On the Premium unit, it is behind the glove box.

You could definitely do it, I just don't know if there is an easy way to go about it.

I'm asking because, rather than pooping on my stock HU (as recomended from HonkeytonkMonkey) I'm selling it on ebay. No sense in destroying something that someone else might want. That was one of the questions possed to me and I really had no idea if it would run without the amp or not. There are an extra set of plugs on the radio that are not being used I just wondered if those might be speaker plugs strait from the radio. Does anyone have a picture of the back of their stock HU or the number on the sticker of a non premium sound CD/radio?

What do you mean by number on the sticker? If you mean the serial numbers, then this is the description given at Radios and more

http://www.radiosandmore.com/

98BB-19B132-A AM/FM Electronic Stereo Cassette with clock

98BB-19B132-B AM/FM Electronic Stereo Cassette, Low Power with clock. Works with: Premium Sound Install Kit unless Premium system already installed

It seems there's only one version of the CD player

98BB-18C815-A AM/FM Compact Disc Player with clock. Works with: Premium Sound Install Kit unless Premium system already installed.

I just recently got the CD player replaced because the dealer "unknowingly" installed a older model. So I know this is the correct number for the CD player that should be in the 1999-2000 Contours.

To guess at your question though, it seems there is a difference between the HU between premium and non-premium in terms of power, but since there's only one CD player and it would be silly to not offer a CD player for non-premium units (of course I have seen sillier things around Ford...), I would venture to guess that the HU will at least work with non-premium systems. Question is how well will it work...

Good point. As of right now people are bidding and seem to know what they are doing. I have only been recomending the unit if they have a premium sound system. Takes all the guess work out.

thanks for your posts

Hey --

I went to that radiosandmore website --

It seems that the stock CD player requires the use of the premium sound amp because it is a LOW POWER head unit. You will probably be able to sell it on ebay as a decent deck with a good layout, but people will need a separate amp to get any juice out of it.

When I got my car it had the tape player (who the hell still uses cassettes? and why?) My brother got his purple Contour just after me and we swapped decks since he didn't use the stereo anyway (he just wanted the radio) This was before I knew squat about my Contour. Well, the CD player needed an amp and he didn't know how to bypass his, so I bought an alpine deck and tossed the old one off a bridge. My point? The premium CD unit wont work without some type of amplifier, and the base tape player usually won't work at all... oh yeah, they also suck a$$! Maybe I'll buy it on Ebay so I can destroy it and be sure the wretched device is gone.

There's only one problem I'm having now, every time I take a crap on the HU, the doctors poke me with the hurt sticks and put me in the room with no lights... at least I have the voices to keep me company... Hello... NO! LEAVE ME ALONE! DON"T PUT YOUR HANDS THERE!... I mean, uh, how's things? Yep, no insanity here, just a regular guy like you... yeah, that will do... the fools! They will never know!
