My tranny just died on Monday:
I was turning left on a street, and I went through 1st gear, tried to put it into 2nd, and I was just stuck in neutral...coasting. You can move the stick in a 360 and hit no gears. The clutch pedal feels normal. The shop I took it to said that the linkage is fine, so they need to pull the tranny to look inside.(shift fork maybe)
They quoted me $1,100 before parts. Am I being ripped off?
specs: 1999 Mercury Mystique LS (v6)
37,000 miles
I'm not sure if the transmission is under warranty...anyone?

P.S. I drive it like it's stolen...and I took it to the drag strip twice.

I higly doubt the trans. is under warranty. I had a clutch, flywheel and Torsen put in for just about the same price as what they quoted you at. I'd just get it done if they say it's broke. If they checked everything else, then you for sure need to open it. From the way you describe things, it sounds like it is broken.

well here's the deal,
$1,160.00 to take the tranny out, and apart....for a $15 bolt
I guess the bolt that holds the shift forks snapped.
Finally, got my car back today, it runs like a dream
P.S. They had to tow it to a different shop, because they couldn't do
the work themselves, hence the 1,160.00 as opposed to 1,100.00.

You mean they charged you to tow it somewhere else, because they could not do the work. Sounds to me like they never should have taken the car in the first place. That is unless you took it too them and they later found out what the deal was.

As for the bolt costing you so much money... this problem is common knowledge to most around here. Also, there is a rather simple fix that you should look into to keep this from happening again. Do a search, within this forum, on shift towers and you should find what I am talking about.

Glad to hear you got her back though and she is driving good! That is what really counts, right now anyway.
