I have a 1998 Contour SE with 76k miles. About 5 times in the past year, with the 2 most recent being the past month, the car would turn over and shake violently for maybe 5 seconds at most then stop. I will replace the fuel filter tomorrow, but am still wondering if the fuel pump and/or MAF are bad. I was not able to listen to the fuel pump these times to see if it was working. I started the engine, then unplugged the MAF and the engine still ran, but a little more rough. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Most likely gunky throttle body or MAF sensor. This could also be due to a small vacuum leak. Check your intake hoses and gaskets for tightness.

Hey my car used to do this to something fixed it not sure what, heres what I've done in the past nine months that maybe could help you

- clean MAF
- injectors flushed
- TB/intake cleaned
- PCV vavle
- new sprak plugs/wires
- air filter

I know what you mean though, the wheel shakes violenty, RPMs go up,up,up, then it dies works fine again on restart.
