Hiya. Got premature rotor wear. I am thinking crappy rotors & pads or calipers are toast. How do I diagnose caliper probs from examination of rotors/pads?

My ride is a 98 Contour SE. Front rotors, rear drums.

What are you considering to be premature rotor wear? What sort of mileage on the rotors/pads? Are they damaged? Cracking? scoring? What about the pads? are the worn strangely?

You are being awfully vague.

I asked how to diagnose a problem....what are signs of caliper probs...

Here is decription of what I see.

less than 1 year on new set of pads & rotors, low KM's like about 15000KM, family car with kiddies so no crazy performance type braking. Rotors have not worn smoothly but have many grooves. LOT of material worn off rotor in this time...like maybe 1.5mm per side (3mm total each rotor). Haven't had the pads off to check for even wear, though.

Waddya think?

Could be caliper drag, does the car lose speed quickly if you put it in nuetral?

Otherwise, I'm guessing you used junk pads and rotors.

Rotors dont wear smoothy because of lug nuts not being tightened to correct torque and or them being on not in sequence.

With your calipers are you sure your slide pins arent sticking have them been lubricated lately, also are you slide pin boots on, they prevent dirt from getting in there?

By the way your rotors are junk if you got 3mm off, that is a lot of wear, those thing are measured in thousands of an inch ya know.

lugs tightened in sequence and torqued OK. The wear on the rotor is little ridges...except right across the face. Not like a smooth almost perfectly flat rotor like I am used to seeing. Strange thing is that it is on both rotors and all 4 sides.

CHecked the slide pins last spring. Cleaned and lubed with a silicone caliper lube. Have not checked yet after winter, however already had the [censored] wear pattern by then. Pretty much started right from the get go with this set of parts.

What about other symtpoms of calipers gone bad?

Maybe is just a case of crappy parts, but I would like to be sure before I blow more money.

Rara is dead on, junk rotors and pads.
