The I have a 98.5 merc. myst. that has the common starter problem. It is getting worse. When it doesnt start, I have to slam my door to get it to start, I belive it moves the starter gear a little bit enough for it to work.

My question does the whole starter need replacing, or just the crappy gear part of it?

If the whole thing must be replaced, are there any aftermarket starters that fit well in the myst. that would save money?

The ford dealer quoted me $250 for the starter and 1.7 hrs for labor, which is $127.

Instead of buying a new one,why not get the old one checked and rebuilt half the price or less.Did that on my sons jeep cost difference 100 vs 250,and is still turning strong.
