I know this is not a truck forum, but just wondering if any tranny experts could advise me. The problem I am having is when I back out of the driveway in reverse and drop the lever into drive to take off...mainly in the morning...I get nothing? like its not in gear at all. If I rev it up a bit it will engage and the rest of the day seems ok. Almost like something is stuck? like a valve body or something? I have replaced the tranny fluid, flushed and replaced filter.I also have noticed is sometimes coming to a stop it will clunk going into lower gear...not always, but sometimes like it delays dropping into the lowest gear at a stop light. It drives great most times, but this not going into drive right away has been getting a little more often lately. Sorry if I should not have posted here...just hoping someone from here might know? Thanks!

Delayed shifts, when cold could be either a weak/failing TFT sensor (transmission fluid temp sensor, which is located on the solenoid block) or sticking valves in the valve body.

[Edit] I just noticed that you was talking about an Explorer. But I am sure the above should still apply.

How many miles does it have on it and how often have you changed the fluid, before now?

Truck has 240,000Km on it, New engine..so I want to keep it a while yet.I have changed the fluid one other time around 90,000KM and again at 225,000KM.Sometimes when I let off on the trhottle as its gearing itself down, you'll hear a bit of a thump...not much, but like something is sticking? you know? The going into drive in the morning has been more often a problem, but it always goes in...just sit a minute and put the gear selector to reverse then park, then drive, then give it a slight amount of throttle and it will engage and the your off and running fine the rest of the day. I added some Lucas tranny treatment, but its still the same?

That was the next thing I was going to mention to ya. It sounds like it is just wearing out, but I think it would worth talking to a shop now before it gets any worse. The longer you wait, the more repairs it will require. But since I am not as well experienced on your Explorer tranny, I would try doing some searches on Google to get some more answers.

These trucks are notorious for need trans replacements for a variety of problems. If you look in classifieds, probably half of the Expo's/Ranger's for sale with automatics say either "new trans" or "needs trans." I agree that it just sounds like yours is worn out. You say you have 240k km, that's 150k miles to myself and my english unit friends - about the time those tranny's go out- actually, you did better than most...!

Hey, I sold my 93 Exploder with 192K miles. It was only on its second tranny with a third one overdue!

I kept burning out OD from pulling my boat....

Yeh I suppose it could be gone...but that does not answer my question. It could still very well be something minor like a modulator, or servo seal...This has been, and still is a good truck to me. If overdrive was burnt out as you suggest, then why will it not go into any gear except reverse, and after it does go into gear...it runs and shifts fine. I won't junk or give up on something because you burnt out 2 or three trannys...If I did that because you did...then everyone here should junk out on thier contours and mystiques because they are bad for tranny as well. I would rather spend money fixing my Mystique and Explorer any day...then paying the bucks they want for a new car that often has just as many problems.

why not go to a transmission shop and get them to give you an estimate for a fix for this and see what they say....
i changed out motor mounts on my 93 taurus and broke the wires from the VSS(vehicle speed sensor) and it kept the transmission in first gear... had to drive 5 -10 mph all the way home.. thought for sure it was the trans. going out.. it was the wires to the VSS that told the trans. to stay in first gear..... might be something as simple as this, keep fingers crossed....
