Is there a way to start a 98+ plus contour/mystique without using the transponder key made for the car (assuming the physical metal key is the same)? I bought mine used, and i only have one key, so if i lose it, i'm screwed unless ther is away to bypass this security "feature".

There aren't any ways that I can tell you about. :p It really ticks me off that the dealers basically have a corner on the market of replacement PATS keys. The keys and the labor to program the vehicle to accept them are seriously overpriced. The key shouldn't be any more than $5 and they shouldn't charge any more than for the 10-15 minutes labor it takes to go through the reprogramming security process. That process isn't even required if you still have two working keys--then it takes less than a minute.

I bought replacement keys from a locksmith on E-bay for $15 each, plus shipping. Got the guy at Sears Hardware to cu it for me. Programmed it myself in a few seconds using the directions the E-bay guy provided.

If you already have two working keys, it is easy to program more (up to 8 total) yourself. If you don't have two working keys, you need a scan tool with PATS programming capabilities.

I haven't tried it yet to be sure, but looking at the EVTM for my 98 Contour indicated that the PATS module can effectively be defeated by grounding one wire.
Interesting......

The new Ford keys are really nice, my Contour ones felt cheap. I always wondered if a non-PATS car could use a PATS key with no code programmed in?

Without the PATS module, it's just a Ford key.

man i would say spend the dough ray mi get a second key made... my mommy has a 2000 taurus and someone at work stole her keys and took them home for 2 days and she had to have a key made so she could drive her car home....it took the locksmith guy like 2hrs to get the codes or something and program a key that would work to start the car...and she was working graveyard just to add to the drama of the nite... i wish my car had that system instead of the stupid 'gotta-disarm-the-remote-everytime-i-get-in-the-car' system thats built in now
95 contour se...dark blue...monsterflow air filter...remanuf atx...wiring harness recall or bust!!!96k miles...motorcraft awsf32pp plugs & red ford racing 9mm wires...kvr black plated cross-drilled rotors & carbon fiber pads...currently undergoing renovation...excuse our dust!!! are my dodgers for real????

If you're really worried about it, go get several generic copies of the key made. Remove the column shroud and duct tape your good PATS key next to the inductive loop. Reassemble. Use your new spare keys just like you have for years. You will probably never know the difference. Plus, in the event the car should get stolen, you can use the insurance money to buy a new car with TWO keys.
