At the end of last summer i followed a buddy out to milan, a local dragstrip. i didnt intend on running my svt but he persued to get me to race him.. when the tree turned green i launched hard at about 4000 or so. The car didnt go anywhere and just made some horrible noises. The strip operator yelled "busted half shaft turn it off". so i had it flat beded home and it sat all winter and now i want to fix it.. When i get in the car it starts fine and the clutch is still good.and is not leaking anything. It also goes into all the gears fine and will move but hits blank spots where it feels like there is no teeth on some gears and it makes slapping noises. does anyone have any clue as to whats this may be.. Broken diff?? would a half shaft make this noise if where busted at the cv joint because the rest of the shaft looks fine.. just cant see under the dust boot. or maybe some stripped out gears?? any information would be greatly appreciated as im going to try and pull the trans myself!! and avoide the trip to terrys shop.
Thank you jon

If you busted a half shaft, the car would still move, but only one of the wheels would be pulling. The slapping noise you heard, and attributed to stripped gears, might be the loose end of the halfshaft whipping around with the turning of the differential? Take another good luck under the car and make sure your half shafts are in one piece. If they are, then I'd say the diff is the culprit.

if the dif is busted, will i still get some motion with blank spots, surging, and do u know how far the dif is inside the trans?. does the whole thing need to be taken apart to get to the dif? oh and also if a half shaft was busted wouldnt the stock dif just turn the easier side and therefore not want to move?

If it's hitting blank spots on both wheels, there's a good chance it's the diff. If one wheel seems like it's a little less powerful than the other when you hit those spots, you have a bad CV axle on that side. You might jack it up on both sides, take the tires off, and have someone run the car with 1st gear engaged. Look at how the CV axle moves. If it moves in any irregular patterns or fails to move only on one side, it's that CV. If it's consistant on both sides, prolly a diff. Sounds like a CV with the sounds and all. Good luck man!
I ran a search already!

i'm actually sure it's a diff, your best bet is a quaife since it's apparently bullet proof and has a LIFETIME warranty, ie you can do those 4k drops, you'll just shoot your axles to hell. . .

what made u sure its the diff... i believe but just curious... and do u know if the whole trans comes apart to get to the dif?. also my car is a 99 svt it has the return fuel system and larger brakes but not sure of what year they revised the trans.. is there a way to tell if i have a revised trans , to upgrade some newer mtx parts??

i'm not a mechanic first off
but when I had a broken half shaft, the car would not move.
it would start up fine, go into gears fine, but when I pushed the gas it would make this knocking sound...
cost me around $230 to get it fixed, I'd take it to a mechanic first...one turn of the wheel and a push of the gas pedal and they found my problem.
