My starter is going out on my 98.5 V6 Manual Contour. I think it is the solonoid since I am getting a whiring/grinding sound when I turn the key. The problem is intermitent. After an attempted push start it turned over. Since the solonoid is only $50 I am going to just replace that instead of the whole starter. Do you think that's a good idea or should I replace the whole starter.
Thanks,
Scott

You should only do that if you disassemble the bendix and check parts for wear. Take all of the old grease off and re-grease. The bendix is usually the culprit.

Yea, the bendix is a common problem. I had the same problem with mine. It started just in cold weather, then it extended to all times. I just ordered a starter from car-part.com Got a slightly used one off a cougar for ~$45. Didn't have the time to take apart the starter and regrease it. Good luck!

yes but check the teeth on the starter drive and the flywheel.... if the teeth on the starter drive are bad they USED to sell them for about $8 to $12 years ago.. dont know what they want for them now but probably alot cheaper then a new starter....
