My '95 Contour 2.0L auto just began to run terrible and making some serious noises from the motor. I checked the timing belt for tension and it seems loose, and I'm guessing the belt jumped timing on the camshafts. Now it will turn over but no start. Is this motor a non-interference type, or should I expect valvetrain damage? Also, any tips on changing the belt would be helpful!!! thanks, tj

Yes, you can expect major engine damage because the engine vavles hit the cylinders I think is what happens. Anyways ( at least)one guy had that happen on here and it cost him $1800 to get fixed.
Suppoused to replace it every 75,000 miles.

The Zetec is supposed to be a non-interference engine, that is if the belt breaks then the engine just stops...no harm done. But if the belt jumped a cog or two the valves may have been operating at the wrong time...you won't know for sure until it's checked out.

With the crank at #1 TDC, how are the camshafts oriented to put it in proper timing?

Yes #1 cylinder must be TDC and you have to have a crankshaft/camshaft alignment tool to do it correctly.

If you tried to do the belt yourself, you probably had a problem with cam gear alignment and proper tension, unless you had the right tools [set of three...seems like I spent over $300.00]. I've seen a few where the right tools weren't used = rough idle and lots of noise.

well someone got ripped off... you would pay alot less for a full zetec swap.. with an engine from a salvage yeard.

In the Haynes manual, it shows a picture of the tool to use for cam alignment. Funny, it looks like a peice of angle aluminum to me, so that's what I used. To take up the slop because the angle was a little undersized, I added plastic shim stock to make up the .030 or so difference. Worked great, cost me nothing.
