My car (98.5 Contour SE, 2.5, mtx)with 92k seems to have developed a rod knock. Im not sure if its a bearing or whatever, but as far as i know, this is fatal. Any suggestions about what to do (one might be sell and run from fords as fast as i can, this is one more thing going wrong that shouldnt, like my syncro on 3) or experience as to what this means and how long i have would be great.

Is the knock on the top of the engine or next to the wheel?

It seems to be comming from the base of the engine, around the crank, which makes me think its a rod. It always happnens, and varies with rpm.

its probably the rod or main bearings. Did you have any oil issues as of lately?

Tip: Drain your oil into something that you can see into very well, and if it is gray, then you wiped out one or more bearings. Also, if you happen to have an old wire strainer, filter the oil through it.

Good suggestion. If there are no apparent signs of debris, then it probably is a throwout bearing in the tranny. I had a brand new one tick on me. If you push the clutch in, the noise would go away.
