I have noticed some crossovers and EQs mention the feature of subsonic filters. I understand that this filters ultra low frequencies. Is this to ease the load of the amp/sub or are there other reasons? When do you need implement sucha filter?

Feedback appreciated.

I believe you have the right idea, that is the only reason I can see to have one. To eliminate the frequencies you can't hear. One thing to consider, which is why I believe not all manufacturers use them, is that you can't HEAR freq. below about 20Hz but you can still FEEL them. Assuming the sub can play that low of course, which many good subs can. My 2 cents.

Yeah, a subsonic filter is about not producing frequencies you don't need.

This means your amp doesn't waist power needlessly on lower frequiencies.

Although some can hear down to 16 Hz (my last hearing test put me at 18Hz to 25KHz) most people don't even hear down to 20 Hz.

SQPlus is correct, you may not hear it but you can feel it.

But know something else, what you feel can create harmonics at higher frequencies you can hear. So subsonic filters are a good means of sound deadening. No vibration, no harmonics equal no unwanted sound. That's why I set my subsonic filters around 17 to 15 Hz.

Another thing to consider is that they are important to have expecially if you have a ported box because subs tend to "unload" under their tuning frequencies.

Also, very low frequencies (3-5 hz) can be dangerous to your heart, not just your hearing.

Anthony, where would I need to go to have a hearing test done? One that gives a frequency range I mean? TIA.

In the Jobs I have had I have to be able to hear. So, the company I work for provides the testing for me.
