Hey guys,

I have a 1996 ford contour ATX and I really like that car, it drives really well, but one day I was driving on the interstate and my speedometer went from about 60 to zero and it hasn't been working since. Also I have a check Enginer light and O/D off is blinking... I took it into autozone to get the codes read and I got a code P0500 error code. After that I took it to my mechanic. I paid to get a new speed sensor put in and it didn't help the situation . Also when I had the vehicle scanned again It gave me the same error codes... Can anyone give me any advise to how to fix this problem? Ever since I have had this problem the car hasn't been shifting properly and it has become really frustating. Could a fuse cause this problem? Thanks alot guys.

Hi!

Welcome aboard. You'll find tons of information here as you search around. Also, be sure to check out the FAQs off of the main site.

http://www.contour.org/FAQ/

As to your problem, you're right to think there is something wrong with your VSS as your code of P0500 indicates a Vehicle Speed Sensor fault.

In the future, you can find other codes within the FAQs

http://www.contour.org/FAQ/FAQ.php?s=probs&displayid=10

Finally, I would be concerned about your tranmission light blinking. This is indicating a transmission fault, and is seperate (although the problem could be related) to your CEL (Check Engine Light).

I would suggest having a mechanic diagnose your transmission problems sooner than later. If something is malfunctioning, it'll only get more expensive down the road.

Be sure to followup with other questions, and we'll all help as we go. Also, make sure you post your results so others may know what to do if this happens to them.

Good Luck!

Yeah I know, I am concered with the Check Engine Light and the O/D Blinking but I checked in the other posts that are similar to mine and I have found that they have been having basically the same symptoms... I was just wondering if anyone got it fixed. I am trying to avoid going to the dealer again to pay outrageous prices but it seems to me that the dealer might be the only one that can help me in this situtaion.

I have a 96 SE MTX and had the same problem with the speedo and the check engine light. Once the speedo is fixed make sure to reset the cars computer by taking out fuse #11? or disconnect the battery for a few minutes. Then see what code you get after driving for a couple of days. I dont know about the O/D light since I dont have one. Good luck and I hope this helps.

The O/D light flashes at the same time that the CEL light comes on when the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) fails and does not indicate a separate transmission problem. Been there, and done that. Replace the VSS, clear the codes and you will be back on your way.
