I got a letter today from the Illinois Secretary of state, I get a notice saying my license plates are suspended because of "Failure to comply with mandatory vechile insurance laws.... Insurance company indicated no LIABILITY Coverate" I get my insurance bill, for my 1995 Ford Contour, BAM: Automotive Liability Insurance, shows I paid for it... They want me to pay $100, and show proof that I have it... I AM NOT PAYING $100!!! Though my contour has been dead for awhile at the moment... Wondering how I should settle this. And when I recieved that, when I tried to call they said their offices were closed... Monday I have to call up, any ideas what I should do? And I was insured since I bought that car... I hate Illinois....

If you paid it, your insurance company screwed up, make them fix it.

Remain calm and don't lose your temper. State workers don't give a damn anyways! Piss them off and they may "delete" you all together I'd wait till Monday, call your insurance to verify all is okay. Then call the state and see what you need to do. It may be a simple visit to the license beureau (sp?).

just fill out the form they should of sent you asking about your insurance.... I had gotten a similar one filled it out mailed it in and never heard another thing about it. I know of a few others that have gotten the same letter. one of them kept getting it over and over again.me and all of them have had coverage the whole time. I think the state just wants to see if they can catch anyone by doing a random mailing of different people to see what they can find out. and the $100 thing sounds a little fishy my letter and my firends just asked for proof of insurance. so I am guessing it's a scam, how do they want to you pay the money and what's the mailing address on the letter?

it's faster than a period.
According to my calculations the problem doesn't exist.

Even if you don't have the answer, you certainly have to admire the problem.

Return address is Jesse White: Secretary of state (SOS), Springfield, IL 62756, the envelope that they want me to send the payment info is Jesse White; SOS; Mandatory insurance division (ah, a WHOLE division for mandatory insurance... thats why they need $100), 501 S 2nd Street room 429, Springfield IL.. They want me to give em a Credit card number, or money order..... If they think im paying, [censored] that!

Redneck? Wow ... I know two Jesse's from high school; it's a pretty common New England name at least ...
Anyway, back on topic, you will have to wait until tomorrow to sort the whole thing out with your insurance company and the state, so why not take today to drive it like you stole it before things settle.

I found this at the State of Illinois' web site : A vehicle with suspended plates/registration cannot be driven by anyone. A vehicle's registration can be reinstated when the owner provides proof of insurance and pays the $100 reinstatement fee. Repeat offenders are required to serve a four-month suspension, pay the $100 fee and provide proof of insurance before being eligible for reinstatement. The reinstatement can be processed by mailing the fee and evidence of insurance to: Office of the Secretary of State Mandatory Insurance Division 429 Howlett Building Springfield, Illinois 62756.
