I cannot have anything in my trunk as I am always using it.

I bought a JL audio 8" inch sub. I went with them because they make great subs for small enclosures. Very small sealed box <0.5 cubic in size.

I plan to custom build the enclosure to be fitting in the roof of the trunk. So when I am standing and looking into the trunk I won't be able to see the box until I bend over and look up into the trunk.

I noticed that there is a stock cut outout for a woofer in the trunk. Any comments on that? I heard that ford planned to have a speaker mounted there but canned it. Has any body made use of the stock cut out?

The box will be mounted about an inch from the roof of the trunk. Should I have the speaker firing up against the sealing of the trunk? I was thinking of placing the woofer over the area (but not mounted) of where the factory mounted sub was suppost to be.

All advice on compact stealth subs apreciated. Also any issues on vibrations.
I am looking for qualty bass, not boom.

If you want to mount it to the back deck. I would make a ported box and fire the port through the hole. I would also mount it a flush a possible to help reduce vibration, but I would suggest spraying rubberized coating first.

Enlarge the hole to about 7 inches or whatever the cone diameter of the sub is. Then mount the box with the driver firing into the hole. THe ported box suggestion would probably be pretty good except that it requires a much bigger box.

I wonder how much depth we have on our decklids? When i get motivated enough to go outside, i'll measure it. What i'm thinking is if we have 12inches of depth, you could get some sonotube, cut it in half and use it for the sub enclosure. It would be a very lightweight and strong enclosure that would be cheap and unobtrusive. To get .5 cubic feet, you would need an enclosure that would be the same size as a 12" cylinder 15 inches long that would be cut in half.

Small enclosure is a challenge, but I believe a non intrusive sub for the contour is possible.

Some good advice, thank you. I will post my results when the project gets rolling. Bought a new table saw for xmas so I will be trying out different things.

Here is a wild idea. take a 8 inch JL and put it into the center console of the pre 98 type. ie gut out everything below the radio and make a custom molded box. Talk about stealth and right in front of your face.

Oh yeah, the box would be behind the console.

Jborge,

I have this same sub in my 2k SVT - (the Microsub 8.1 I'm assuming).

I mounted mine (using the supplied bracket) hanging from the right side of the rear deck (where the 8" hole is). Then aligned the face of the sub exactly parallel to the back of the rear seat (firing into the seat). This is what JL audio as well as some installers recommended to me. It sounds awesome and maximizes your trunk space.

Beware though -- the sheet metal of the rear decklid is very thin, and the surface area of the bracket is such that if you do not reinforce it, the sub will wobble once you hang it on there (because of the leverage created. To get around this, just use a piece of wood and screw the bracket to this first -- then mount the whole deal on there. Well worth the extra 10 minutes and mine's really strong now.

I don't have the microsub, just the speaker, I am fully aware of the reputation of the microsub, sounds bigger then it is. I am building my own box and it will be close to the microsub spec. Love your feedback, I feel better knowing that it is working well for you.

I am also investigating the possibility of building the sub under the passenger seat. It is possible but requires work. The box has to be bolted to the glide rails so the box moves with the seat when sliding the seat in different positions. The box will also be elevated so it won't take up valueble toe space for rear passengers. This is a big project and I am still thinking it over carefully.

Also the heater duct under the seat has to be removed as this creates a big bump under the seat and gets in the way of the sub. The heater duct only flows a little air when the climate control is set to "floor". I don't have many rear seat passengers.

I have also investigated the idea of the center console enclosure. There is very little room. It could maby be done with a six inch woofer which I believe JL also makes.

I will keep you all up to date. Further comments are appreciated.

This is what I did. First buy 2 8" subs that can go in small sealed boxes (.25-.3 cu ft) Kicker Solos are wildly inefficent. I had the Infinity Kappas and was unimpressed. I now have JL 8W3 D4 with dual 4 ohm voice coils wired for a 2 ohm load. I am very satisfied with these. Second, build or have built for you sealed boxes that will fit under the shelf. Mine are trapizoidal to match the angles under there. Third (the scary part) cut two 7" holes in the shelf. One between the seatbelt anchor and the trunk hinge. The other to the outside of the existing hole (in order to make it symmetrical) Fill in the existing hole(I welded in a patch, but I realize that I am crazy) Cut matching holes in the cardboard and carpet cover. Hang the boxes from the shelf. Wire. Enjoy.
In addition to not rattling the trunk, this setup also preserves cargo space. I also have my two Sony Amps hanging from the shelf.

This is an SQ install and will never compete with 10's or 12's with the seat down for SPL.
