I'm in the market for a new beater since my son totaled my last one a couple of weeks ago when he slid on the ice and hit a fire hydrant ('94 Grand Am, 98K, $3,500 damage=totaled) Insurance company gave me $2,500 for the car. AT my work we have a "For Sale" board and there is a:

1992 Saab 900S 2 door hatchback
$2,500 or best offer.
147,000 miles
5-spd, A/C, CD Stereo, heated leather seats, sunroof
in great condition, no rust, runs well
all service records available
MD state inspected

NADA list's the car at Low Retail $2,050, Average Retail $3,050 and High Retail $3,800 (no adjustment for the high mileage)

Never really liked these cars nor do I know anything about them. But I may be able to get it for $2,000 or less and if it's a decent car I can live with the Snail-like looks

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

Having previously owned a Saab 9000 and having a buddy who owns a Saab 900 SPG (Saab's version of SVT) I know a bit about Saabs. The 900 is a fine workhorse, will haul loads of crap in the hatchback, and has some of the best seats in the car world. The motors are very very reliable. The 900S has a non-turbo 4, not the fastest thing in the world but as I said pretty reliable.

For the real scoop on Saabs check out SaabNet

Thanks for the info...does the price seem good for this car if it is as nice as they claim?

You're welcome on the info. As to price, I have no idea, it's been a few years since I looked at them and they vary greatly by area. A local cheap used car dealer has had a similar vintage 900 Turbo sitting on his lot for some time now with an asking price of $2500, but local market conditions vary. Take a look at the classifieds on saabnet to get a decent idea on price.

Talk to Baco99 ... he's had a few Saabs and recently bought another 900-somethingorother as his winter beater.

... For that price, have you considered a '95 or '96 Contour GL?

I look all the time...especially since I have my E1 wheels, stock SVT exhaust, SVT intake, SVT Springs and SVT rear sway bar sitting in my garage waiting for one to come along

I have a Saab 9000 beater turbo. Picked it up for $500 with electronic climate control, moonroof, dual seat heaters, power everything, new clutch... etc. Badass little car and it scoots after 3000rpm.
