I'm going to be ordering a performance Y pipe and hige flow cat from BAT soon as my main cat is breaking up,what are peoples experiences wityh gutting the std pre cats on these engines?? Is it worthwhile?? Will i still pass emissions with just a high flow main cat?? Thanks..........(and no,I'm not buying headers-too much $$$$$ spent on this car already)

Gutting the pre cats will add considerable noise and cabin resonance. Passing MOT is questionable. Try MEG for input from people on your side of the pond, or contact Terry Haines.

I'm not sure how your country's emmissions work, but over here our cars would pass the "sniffer" test w/o precats and a main cat. What if you got a performance ypipe with no cat and left your precats intact?

My opinion is to skip the gutting. The performance gains are negligable for the trade off in noise.

Too bad. A set of headers is well worth the money. Keeping a free flowing main-cat and an open resonator is also a good idea.

Exactly.
By "open" resonator he means one that uses a perforated core (not louvered) and retains it's full inner diameter.

Well the car already has a stainless free flowing performance exhaust so i think i'll just stick with the cat and Y pipe (Only buying this because the main cat is breaking up ).Gutting the pre cats sounds like a lot of hassle and if the trade off is more noise and not much power then it's not worth a day under the car

I recently mystery modded & found that I have very little extra noise. I noted a touch more drone, my wife didn't notice any change - she's the one with the good hearing.
Much of the volume from headers can be dealt with by sizing & type of exhaust components. Keeping the main cat will quiet things considerably, add a nice muffler behind it & perhaps something like a resonator or another muffler at the rear & you should be in good shape.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
