If you live in East Tennessee or happen to break down in Knoxville, TN, and need transmission work done. DO NOT GO TO TRANSMISSION WORLD!! I took my 98 Mystique (V6) in to the flywheel replaced and they have had the car since 7 am on Wednesday and today (Friday) they're telling me all they have done is dropped the transmission, they haven't done anything as far as checking it out or replacing the one part I was having them do. Furthermore, they do not call and give you any progress reports or anything else that a reputable shop would do. I would not advise anyone go there. BTW, they're unfriendly too. Sorry for the rant, but you've been warned.

That sucks they haven't gotten anything done yet. I'm up there every now and then, I'll be sure to not break anything until I get home. Then again, I reckon I'll just stick to trying not to break anything anywhere! Which doesn't seem to work out for me... Anyway, good luck with your tranny mangh.

It's been a week now that they've had my Mystique to change the flywheel, and I am disgusted with the service! They dropped the transmission out the first day that they got it (a week ago), and then didnt touch it again until today (Tuesday), which leads me to believe that they only dropped the transmission to stop me from taking my car to a different shop. I went by yesterday and they gave me a run around about how he thought they were almost done with it, and then my dad stopped by today and they tried to convince him that my car needs 3,200 dollars worth of transmission work. My car probably isn't even worth 3,200 dollars. Furthermore, they have left my car out in the elements (and in a not so nice part of town) with the hood popped open, so all of my electrical components are soaking wet. Anyway, sorry for the rant, but seriously... don't go to Transmission World. Ever.

I have never had work done there, but I have taken my car to the Amoco on Callahan Road in Powell. My transmission was acting funny, and they told me that my fluid was all black and burnt and that meant I needed a whole new transmssion over 1000 bucks. RIIIGHHHHTTTT. I told him where to stick it and walked out. I went up the street to All In One Automotive (a execellent mom and pop place) and they drained the fluid and put me a new filter in, and I've been good to go since. Just think of it this way, tranmission world and amoco transmissions are corproations and just like everything else in this capitalistic world, are out to make money. they don't care about how much you love your car.
BTW, nice to meet ya, it's great to see a fellow Knoxville person on here!

The filter for the CD4E is located inside the tranny. So if they changed your filter - they would have to drop the subframe, pull the tranny, place it on a bench, open it up (it splits in half), pull the filter and replace the seals, flush each side of the case and TC, put everything back together and fill with new fluid.
In parts, you are only looking at around $30 bucks at the most. In labor, no less then $500, but most likely around $800.

It really doesn't matter if it's a "mom&pop" or "national chain". All it takes is one dishonest person in any shop to rob someone.
Rule 1 - Educate yourself on the problem as much as possible. Don't walk into any shop blind!
Rule 2 - Shop around. Make some phone calls and walk into these shops and ask to sit down and talk to the service manager. I have even asked to speak to the person that was going to be doing the work on my car.
Rule 3 - Ask questions. And don't be afriad to ask any question. Don't think you are insulting their intelligence or lack there of. You have no idea who these people are and the same goes for them. If they do not want to understand you or let you understand them, they surely are not going to understand your car or it's problems.
Rule 4 - Cheaper is not always better. It can be, depending on the shop, but most of the time it's not. Neither is the most exspensive. I like to find a good middle ground, unless the shop with the highest bid can conveince me they can earn the higher bid.
Rule 5 - Investigate the shop doing the work. Ask around town. Next time your in a store, just walk up to someone and make mention how exspensive something is. Once the conversation is rolling, ask them about your topic. You would be amazed at the information you can get this way.
I guess I could go on, but these are the general rules that I dealt myself when I was a mechanic. I told myself that I had to earn the trust of the customer and this is how I will do it. It also helped me pin point weakness I had so that I could over come them. Within two years, I had people driving 40 or more miles to get suspension work done on their cars, truck, vans & SUV's.
