Well my greatest fear come true. I got the call from the garage that my clutch has gone bad.
I was quoted $1755.00 (Clutch + Pressure Plate + Throw out Bearings + Labor)
Personally, that sounds steep to me. Anyone got a ball park range for this sort of work. And would anyone like buy this car before the work is done.

I love the car, but thats a lot of $$$$ and I don't think I'm gonna be able to find a dealership or garage that can do good work for a reasonable price. I live in the DC / Baltimore area and if anyone knows reputable shop the reference would be appreciated.
Strategic suggestions are welcome.
Thanks!

Buy the parts from Bill Jenkins - the disc, pp and tob will come in at about 300 dollars. Then find a local tranny shop to do the install for between 500-800 depending on the shop. It's like 9 hours labor by the books so there's no getting around the steep labor charge, unless you are very handy with a wrench Most dealer installs I've heard quoted were in the 1200ish range - so yes your quote seems high. good luck

I paid $450 labor + $600 engine + $200 clutch kit for the whole deal lat time, they said it was no big deal to do the clutch once the engine was out. This time it was $550 labor for an engine swap. So yeah, that is a bit much. I do live in a more rural area, but seriously, there is no way that is cost-of-living.

that's way overpriced, did you go to a dealer? mine was about 1300 and that included the spec stage II clutch
"What did you think about that Dorothy girl?"
"The whole Judy Garland thing kinda turned me on. That doesn't make me some sort of fag does it?
"Nah baby, your money."

I would shop around. I got mine replaced for $1000.00 including tax which included all new parts that you mentioned plus the slave cylinder. I even think the dealer will be cheaper than what your shop is quoting.

Changing a clutch on a 2.5 is not exactly a walk in the park, its actually one of the toughest clutches I have changed. I can find out what we charge at my dealership.

on older hydraulic clutch vehicles the slave was on the outside of the bell housing so you could do a slave swap out real cheap.. about $20 for the part and about 30 minutes labor.. now you have to pull out the engine and trans. to take the trans. apart to get in there... those front wheel drive vehicles are an added expense for the car owner... the engineers who designed them did so for a cheaper way of making the cars so the manufacturer would make more money.. they did not car or consider the cost of repairs....

I was quoted about the same price, although with a spec stage II. It hasn't failed yet, but the pedal is starting to ride pretty high. So, spring break I'm clearing out the garage and doing it myself. I just can't see spending $1000 on labor. Plus, I'm going to do the flywheel and syncros as well as the clutch, maybe even an lsd(about the same price for the clutch and labor alone). I'll keep you all posted once I turn the wrench. Sean

Wow...that is a lot! I'm getting a CenterForce dual-friction clutch, Billet flywheel and a new adjustable quadrant put in my 03 Cobra next week and it's not even that high. I would shop around. You can get the parts from Bill Jenkins or http://www.fordpartsonline.com and have a small shop install them for less. I'm having mine installed by Horsepower by Herman. He's in Crofton.

RWD vehicles are usually much less labor-intensive when replacing a clutch.
To replace the clutch and transmission on my 1988 Mustang GT was something like $300 in labor.
I was actually considering doing it myself, although I decided not to because I wanted a shop to install the transmission so it'd be their problem if there were something wrong with it.
