Well, this one's got me stumped. I have been experiencing an intermittent high pitch whining noise for the past 4 mo. now. It gets louder as I rev the engine. Brought it to a mechanic, told me it was the belt tensionner and idler pulleys so I replaced those. Problem stopped for a bit. Then the noise reappeared. This time, a mechanic told me it was the power steering pump. Replaced it. Guess what? The problem's back. What now? I should mention - when this high pitch whine is happening, there is an awful smell coming from the engine compartment - like something's burning. I don't know anymore and I'm tired of throwing money away. Any suggestions?

Wait... I guess it's important to note here that it's not a squealing noise that's occuring but rather a whining or whirring noise.

I would take that back there and shove it up his ass man.

Took me five times to the shop before they finally decided to fix the problem right.

My belt squealed very loud, got it fixed came back, and happened a few times.

Finally last month they put on a new belt again and the problem is now gone.

I would have him check the belt/tensioner again.

Ya, that kinda sounds like the alternator.

Well everybody, I've finally found a good mechanic! After describing the symptoms to a friend of mine, he told me to visit the mechanic he uses. So I brought the car to him, he looked at it, and quickly discovered that it was the alternator. Apparently the armature has burnt out in it, making the high pitch noise and giving off the smell. (short circuiting) Here's how he found out it was the problem which is a good tip for others: He stuck a long screwdriver against the alternator. He then put his ear to it and the whining noise was amplified through the screwdriver. Never thought of doing that!

another good method is to use a mechanics stetescope(sp??), just like the doctors use, but it has a long metal tip on the end that you touch to the suspected part.. i got one at www.harborfreight.com , at their local store for about
$2.49.... works great...... amplifies the noises a good bit.
