I have looked through a search and it doesn't quite tell me what i want to know, perhaps someone here knows. From what I understand the atx does not have a removable filter, but it does have a drain plug.Question one where is the plug located, and question 2,once you have drained the fluid, how much do you add? Would kind of like to do this my self,so any help is very welcome, thanks.

You add four quarts after getting fluid out. Secondly you dont pull a plug, you have to remove all the bolts for the pan.

Do it so three sides are off complety then remove the fourth side, less mess.

You must have a torque wrench to reinstall the bolts. I think it is 18 foot pounds.

You cannot entirely drain the atx fluid (9 quarts) so this is really a dilute old-with-new process.

Here's an edited version of procedure from service manual:

Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill

Raise and support the vehicle.

Place a suitable container under the transaxle drain plug.

Note:
If an integral problem is suspected, drain the fluid through a paper filter. A small amount of metal or friction particles may be found from normal wear. However, if excessive metal and friction particles are present, internal service will be required.

Remove the transaxle drain plug and drain transmission fluid.

Add 4 quarts of Motorcraft MERCON® Multi - purpose automatic transmission fluid or equivalent meeting MERCON ® specification.

Start the engine and run through all gears for a total of five minutes at idle. Turn off the engine.
(As an alternate, some owners just drive for a few miles or a day or so before the next step).

Repeat above steps
(i.e. another drain/refill with 4 quarts) to help flush fluid from the torque converter.

Drain plug rather conspicuous when you look under car, it's towards driver's side from the oil pan drain plug (I'm assuming v6).

As you can see, prior post incorrect; there is no pan, only drain plug.

Torque for drain plug: 19-21 Ft-lbs.

Then we must have different cars or mine must have a different tranmission.

I got 4 quarts removed in February of last year, happen to watch the mechanic doing it and he removed a drain pan from the car.

Nope, only one type of atx, regardless of engine. Hopefully your mechanic didn't mistakenly remove the Main Control Cover (under battery) to do a tranny fluid change.

Well the car has ran fine since he did it.

My car got into an accident a few years back, declared a total loss. Got it re- conditioned, maybe they put in a new tranny, and they got one that had the drain pan, not plug.

Is it mandatory to use torque wrench,or just preferred?

Look under your car, from behind the front driverside wheel. You will see the bottom rear of the trans housing. You will see a section that sort of pertrudes back to the firewall. On this section, you will see a small plug in the case of the tranny. You can put the nub of a 3/8" drive rachet in this plug to remove it. It just screws out like a drian plug. Well, that is what it is.

Once removed, approximately 3.5 to 4 quarts will drain from the tranny. It is best to do this with the fluid warm or at operating temp, which is simple enough to do. Just drive around for about 12 miles or until your engine temp gauage reads in the normal range. That should be good enough.

Once drained, reinstall the plug back into the case of the tranny.

Then pour 3.5 quarts of new ATF (Mercon/DextronIII) down the fill tube, located in the engine bay. Start the car and while holding the brake, run through the gears for a second or two. Just long enough for them to engauge for a second and move on to the next. Do this from 1, 2, D, N, R then P. Allow the car to continue to run and get out and check the fluid level. You might have to add the other half a quart.

TIP - To get the most out of the tranny... Use a floor jack to lift the front of the car. This will allow a little more fluid to come out when drainning.

There is no need to remove the control cover (pan). Actually, removing the pan might get two quarts out. That's about it. The Valve Body is not submerged in fluid, but there are drain backs located at the bottom.

Here's a pic of the drain plug location.
