anyway...

today i was coming home from a friends house, when i noticed something odd... i was in 5th gear, i hit the gas a bit, and the revs AND speedometer jumped all the way up, as if i was in neutral (the speedometer went up though...) anyway... this happened again... i started to get concerned... then it did it one last time and failed to engage the transmission again... and hasn't driven since.

i really hope this isn't a transmission problem... i can't afford to put yet ANOTHER transmission into this vehicle... im hoping it's just a broken CV... the speedometer thing leads me to believe that.

im not sure if it matters... but it was about 10 degrees outside when this happened.

thanks in advance for any insight you guys might have.

I'd guess it was a CV axel too, just because of the speedometer jumping up.

But, will the trans not go into gear(s) now?

Cool, I'd bet on a CV axel.

whew... this is kind of a relief... i replaced the cv's when i had my mazda mx6 and it wasn't that hard of a job at all... does anyone know about how much money i'm looking at spending on a set of these? i have no desire to go with any sort of performance product... just stock is fine by me!

thanks very much for the input, i appreciate it.

the first paragraph sounds exactly like a burned up clutch to me.

The transmission will go into every gear and you will have pressure on the clutch pedal since it is the springs from the pressure plate that give you the "clutch pressure".
Your disk could be completely burnt or gone and you will go into every gear, not move and still have pressure.

A bad axle would make a crapload of noise while it was going out and most likely would only be ONE that went out. THe other wouldn't turn as the diff would spin the gears to the broken one. However, you'd likely still have some noise coming from it when you put it in gear and let out on the clutch.

The engine reving unusually high under load is always a good sign of clutch slip. Remember that even if the clutch is slipping it still has some pressure on it from friction and will cause the car to accelerate a little until the linings are gone or the hub is sheared out.

So of the two, the information fits the burned out disk and not the axle.

hm.

if it is, in fact, the clutch... i'm wondering why there was absolutely no slippage whatsoever before this happened... and why it stopped working, then started again, then stopped again, then started again, then stopped for good... (and when i say it was stopping and starting again, it was defintely not slipping... it was completely engaging, or nothing at all... but no clutch slippage at all.)

and yes, there is a very slight noise when i put the car in gear, let the clutch out... nothing too brutal... but it is making some noise, yes.

one other notable item...

i have had a very noisy "rubbing" type sound coming from my front driver side wheel, especially when turning right. i was told this is my wheel bearing? (there is absolutely nothing rubbing on the tire or the wheel)... im just wondering if this could be at all related to this.

A quick way to tell if it's a CV is to re-create the problem with the tires blocked good (or possibly on ramps or something) and the e-brake on, have somebody put it into gear very carefully and you can carefully peek under the car and see if the inner CV housing, outer CV or axle turns at all on either side. A broken CV is usually pretty easy to spot in about 2 seconds. If neither of your inner CVs are turning at all at their innermost point where they come out of the trans (while tranns is engaged into gear) then your problem lies in your trans or clutch. So then you pull your trans, inspect the clutch and you'll likely tell if it's that or inside your trans. Warmonger is right about the noise factor too. A CV or trans failure will likely cause a loud noise like hell breaking loose. I would say clutch as well. Also, the clutch is always most likely to slip in 5th gear sincethe input shaft of the trans has the most load on it while in fifth due to the ratio of overdrive. Then if you slipped it really bad and overheated it such that the clutch facing completely separated from the disc then that would explain your sudden failure. But it could still be a bad CV since you DID mention a noise from the wheel area while turning sharp. That type of noise is consistent of a CV that is ready to go
