I have a 1999 SVT Contour and I went to get another key made for it at home depot. The guy at the counter said it did not have a transmitter in it and made me a key but when I tried it out it didn't work. Does the SVT Keys have radio signal or something in them? if I want a duplicate do I have to get them at the dealership?

yup, I had to pay like $60 dollars for one at the dealership, another like 50 for the damn keyless remote.

i think you need the key with a chip in it, then you have to let it recognize the key, but you need 2 previously encoded keys to do it.

yup its the PATS II system, antitheft measure, but really its so ford can sell the keys for whatever they want, i suggest going on ebay an buying the keys i have seen some non-ford coded keys then you have it cut to match your current one and follow the how-to under the mods section on how to program it

You can program your own key if you already have two. (still need to buy one and have it cut) If not you get raped by the dealership...

Well I have two keys, and a key already cut that doesn't work, so how do I program it myself? I'm excited!

yea...buy any ford or startec blank with a chip....like the one in the above post, got to home depot, have it cut. Then:
Put the first working key in the ignition, turn it to run, then wait for the "theft" light to go out.
Immediatly remove the key, put in the second working key, turn it to run, then wait for the theft light to go out.
Immediatly therafter, insert the new cut/unprogramed key, then turn it all the way to start and crank till the engine catches.
You have sucessfully programed a 3rd key.
NOTES: -You can only program a max of 4 keys per car. -If you have a model past-1997, you need only one key to program another, just remove step 2 above. -If it is a 1998-current model, you MUST have 2 working keys. If you dont you need to go to the dealer to program the 2nd key.

I wish I'd have known about the Motorcraft lube that todras posted for us last week. I spent almost $70 for a key & programming at the dealer the first week I had my car. My butt still puckers up when I go past that place.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.
