I know this is a worn-out topic, but I have searched the Trouble-shooting forum and could not find a definitive statement regarding the water pump.
I own a 2000 SVT Contour and my wife and I are going to take it on a 1300 mile round trip in April. The car has 46K miles on it and I am a little concerned about the water pump going out during the trip. I have read about the plastic vs metal impellar, but could have sworn I read somewhere that the pumps on the 2000 models were upgraded.
Can anyone enlighten me as to whether or not I need to change the pump before the trip? I have never had an overheating problem with the car and the temperature gauge never quite gets to halfway mark, even in the hottest (Alabama) weather.
Thanks for the assistance.

When I changed the H2O pump on my '98.5 CSVT at 108k miles I found the white impeller in apparently perfect shape. Your '00 should have the white impeller, which last a looooong time, unlike the black impeller pumps where the plastic gets brittle and breaks. Leave it be for now, and enjoy your trip!

You could be OK with the present pump for another 200K miles, or it could fail tomorrow. Traditionally when a water pump goes bad, it starts leaking at the seal (bad seal/bad bearings). The Contour pump just goes suddenly, without warning when the impeller disintegrates or cracks in half. A metal impeller won't do this. At your mileage, you should be OK however.

when in doubt check it out
in other words just look at your current one, if its metal your ok, if its broken replace, if its plastic and not broken you can reuse it but for the price of a water pump vs the price of a new engine and the time saved not waiting on the car to cool down so you can drive it to be fixed is well worth it

I have a 98 e0 SVT and mine had the white one let go at around 85K while I was on a trip to disneyworld. Pretty easy to change even in a parking lot, but for the price and convienence, you might just want to take it apart and verify a metal impeller or if it is plastic, buy a new one with the metal to be safe.
Just my opinion, Brad
