Ok, so maybe it is just the fact that I don't come here that often since I don't actually have a Contour (yet) but I discovered something the other day that made me jump for joy. I was looking around on car domains and seeing what mondeos they had listed there. I was in the middle of bitching to my roomate about how the parents of some rich brat in Mexico bought him a mondeo when my jaw suddenly dropped. Mondeo in Mexico? Nah, something this cool couldn't possibly be true. So hoping against all hope I clicked over to Ford Mexico ( Ford Mexico) where, sure enough, they are selling 2004 Ford Mondeos. I was so happy I almost ran screaming down the halls of my dorm room. Anyway, I sent an email over to Western Cascade (an import company located here in the Seattle area that does a lot of work importing cars from Canada) to see what they know about importing cars from Mexico. Now, I am probably about a year out from looking at buying a Contour/Mondeo but suddenly discovering that I don't have to ship a car across an ocean to have the one I want has really gotten me excited!

yes, here's a Mondeo from Mexico. the owner was on vacation here, a friend of mine brought him over to my home, so I took a few pictures. of it.

Would I get in trouble if I said "Leave It In Mexico". Looks like a VW Jetta and Focus Sedan mixed together. now the Jetta is a nice looking car, but the Focus secan look just uglifies it.

This belongs in the FAQ since its literally asked once a month. Yes, Mexico has Mondeos. No, it would not be practical to import them, as US Customs requires that imported vehicles must be modified to conform to US safety and emissions standards. LinkLink

Sorry bout that. I just got excited in the spur of the moment. I acutually like the new body style more than either of the ones sold here in the U.S. And for the sake of uniqueness, if it is at all possible to get one here, I will consider it.

Yeah, I shouldn't be so negative about it, either. Its entirely possible to import a car as long as you can afford any necessary duties and modifications. Part of me would really like to see someone do it, but then my realistic side kicks in.

It's not bad looking up close. Ford is changing a lot of it's Mexican lineup to reflect the European offerings, the Mondeo, the Fiesta, the Ikon (Fiesta sedan), the Ka.

I got a response back from the importing people today and they said that in essence it would be $7-10k to get the car into the country. They talked about all kinds of safty stuff that has to be there and other crap like that which I can't imagine the car not having but there is all kinds of testing stuff for emissons supposidly that the government would have to do. The one thing that would change things is if you could get a letter from Ford saying that the car was built to meet U.S. safty and emissions regulations. That would clear up a lot of the problems. I can post the email responce if anyone wants to read it, it is just kind of long so I didn't want to just throw it in here.

i think in florida you could probally get away with it. they dont even do inspectiosn out here. they check check if the vins on the car match up and if its stolen if the car came from out of state.
