ok today(i live in Wisconsin and it was -15 out) i tried to start my car for like ten minutes and right when it was just about to start i noticed that the MPH gauge went up to 30 while the RPM's didnt move. I quickly turned my engine off and tried once more...it did the same thing. Im not going to try to start it untill it gets warmer. But would anyone have any idea what would make the MPH move before it started.

if the speedo went to 30 thats a problem because the speedo is cable driven and that means that something in the trany was moving fast enough to make it do that

I had the exact same thing a month ago. Turned out to be the wiring harness. Got it replaced under the recall program, and no problems since.

Some of the early 95's were cable driven, but I believe all of the 96's and newer were electronic. I just had a similar problem with my Chevy Silverado. The speedometer would climb when I revved the engine when I was in park or neutral. Shortly after that, the speedometer and tach went wacko, and started bouncing and climbing erratically everytime I accelerated. As it turned out, the problem was a loose ground wire going to the battery. The ground was good enough to start the engine, and run all the lights, but apparently the ground was weak enough that I was getting some kind of surge through the electrical system everytime I accelerated. I don't know if the same thing would happen on a contour, but it's worth looking at.
