Rich, I am not sure what the 3rd bolt is that you speak of. Maybe it wasn't on the 98's because I only had 2 bolts. As for the vise grips, I thought you were saying that the bottom bolt was the one you stripped. If not then you should be able to get the bottom one off with just a normal 6 point socket and 3/8 drive ratchet, just need to be patient as you only get 1 or maybe 2 clicks each time on the ratchet.

Theres 3 bolts on the 2.5 V6, 2 on the bottom and one on the top. Could be someone changed your alt. before and just didnt bother putting it back in cause its such a pain in the ass

yeah, I did have it changed so that is probably what happened. Can this cause a problem at all?

I doubt it, the alternator would still be pretty secure in there with just the bottom 2 bolts in. Im NOT saying its a good idea, but Im not sure if it would cause you problems. Definately put one back in there when you re-install it. -Nick

the 2 bolts I have in mine are the one you have to reach up over the exaust from the drivers side, and the one right on the bottom that you can just barely reach with a ratchet. where does the 3rd one go? my alt. only has 2 "ears" on it so I don't even know where the 3rd is supposed to be?

On mine, with the alternator in the car, its directly on the top of the alternator. You can hardly see the damn thing with the alternator in.
