I have these two engine codes on and can't figure out what is wrong. I took it to Autozone and had them use their diagnostic tool to tell me that both engine banks are running lean. Is this something with the O2 sensors or something else? Any help would be great.

I also have a 97 Contour V6 - I just went through what I suspect might be your problem. When first realizing I had those two codes, I got cheap & pulled the battey cable off, to clear them. This worked for approx. a week, and then I got a third code P0420 - I ended up having a bad Cat. converter. The dealership fortunately covered it under the 80,000 mile emissions warranty. Immediately after the Cat was replaced, the same two codes came back P0174, P0171. The dealer informed me that I had an upper & lower intake leak. I ended up replacing both sets of intake gaskets myself, and the car is running fine. The procedures for doing this can be found in the How-To's. Hope this helps.

i had i thappen to me also but mine was the codes for running rich in each bank. i unhooked the battery and the cel hasnt come back on for like 2 weeks. i guess it was something that caused it to go rich for a little while at start up and it picked it up and threw a code.

If both codes are tripped at the same time, it could indicate a vacuum leak in the induction path somewhere.

Very sound advice.

Look for a vacuum leak.
Starting fluid is a good way to help find it.

my moms explorer had those. i pulled the intake to clean it but it wasnt dirty. i cleared the codes and a few weeks later they came back. finally my dad took it to our mechanic. needed a new lower intake manifold gasket. $20 part. plenty of labor cost.

I just completely rebuilt the intake this past summer because of the same problem, but the CEL came back soon after that. I just got a new y-pipe and want to keep the new convertor from burning up so I am trying to figure out the problem. I used a torque wrench on all the gasketed surfaces so I'm not sure if that is it or not. I'm stumped. Any suggestions on what to try first. Thanks.

Try cleaning the MAF.

Don't overlook the PCV area. Make sure the valve is working, then put o-clamps around the tubes to ensure there's no un-metered air getting in. Some new tubing won't hurt either.
