Hello all,

Last week I purchased a 99' SE V6 5spd. Contour and I have noticed some peculiarities when shifting. The car only has 16K miles on it, so I don't believe it is from wear. Basically, I've noticed that when I shift below 3000 RPMs, upon letting out the clutch, there is a thud, like something is engaging prior to the clutch engaging. If I shift at 3000 or above, this thud is not noticed. A friend of mine has a 96' Contour V6 and another has a 97' V6. Both of those cars exhibit this behavior too. I've been thinking about it and perhaps there is "slop" in the system and at lower revs the plates are not exactly true, so that first thud is the first contact between the plates. Another reason may be the fact that the revs fall rather slow upon shifting (I've read the FAQ about this issue) and when shifting at lower revs, the thud is the gear/synchro compensating for the higher rotational speed.

I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this issue. Is there a way to fix it, beyond merely shifting at 3000 RPMS? Perhaps a change in lubricant? Any input would be appreciated.

Regards,
Gavin

Trans mount or either roll restrictor.

That's where I would start looking.

I would check the engine mounts, At higher RPMS they are "loaded" from engine twist, but if they are loose when the engine engages the tranny it can twist on the mounts if they are worn/loose, ect. Does the intensity of this thud depend on how hard you let out the clutch?

Thanks for the replies, I'm definitely going to get the car up on stands to have a look for any loose mounting points. In response to hondas_for_breakfast, I haven't tried just popping the clutch, as I'm trying to avoid the thud. I'll pay closer attention to it on my next drive and report back.

Regards,
Gavin

Yeah, let us know what you find. I have that sam issue. I replaced the engine mounts and even had the polyeurathane insert put in the front mount and I still get that thud at low rpm. The trans mount below the air box isn't broken and I know that is a problem with these cars.
