Is our Zetec an interference or a non interference engine? I read taht if it is a non interference engine that we dont need head work just a new timing belt and tensioner... is this true? has anyone here ever done one of these and is it hard to do?

I suggest going to the Zetec Maintenance forum and do a
search, you'll find ten zillion posts about this.

To answer your question, most probably you only have to
replace the belt/tensioner, and it is doable at home.

I tried to get a real answer on this. I contacted Ford and they referred me to my dealer...who didn't know. Neither did the 3 other dealers I asked. They all wanted me to come in 40,000 miles ago and pay $250 to have it changed.

Good news. It's a NON-interference engine. I found out through the dealer and gates.com. Gates.com list all timing belt applications and specifies interference or not, along with the correct belt. You'd be surprised to see how many of the forgien models are interference.
