Hi all! The factory radio in my '96 Mystique has died a noisy death and I do not desire to replace it with an aftermarket one. What I was woundering is, if anyone has a working OEM AM/FM/CD that they may have replaced and still have. Maybe we could work out a deal. They ARE very expensive at the dealer and the junk yards have dog @#$% between their ears if they think I will pay what they want.
I'm in the middle of a big project now so please don't think i'm ignoring you if I don't get back right away, but I am interested if there is one available. Especially more so if it is in the North Texas area. I would consider going to fetch it then.

Try the classifieds or Ebay. Usually Ebay has quite a few of 'em.

Just curious:

Why don't you want an aftermarket unit? the factory CD player skips more than the Fab 5.

I want OEM, because I just want to "plug it in". and I would rather just keep the stock dash appearance. My last was an AM/FM/cassett. I never used the cassett and the radio never left FM 92.5 or recently 93.3. I felt a CD player would be more usefull, but FM is all I really want in the end.

OK, fair enough. I use the CD part a lot. When I first bought the car, the CD player skipped so much that I had it replaced in the first week. If i still had, it (which I don't think I do), I would have sent it to you for the price of postage. I might have a AM/FM/Cass OEM unit from 95 Taurus sitting around at home that you can have if you're interested. I can look when I get home.

If you want to keep a stock dash appearance but don't mind some wiring, the single-DIN AM/FM/CD player from the 99-00 Mazda Protege/Miata will fit right in, has green illumination, and has a black face like the factory CD player. Unlike the factory CD player, it isn't known for having problems ejecting CDs, and it has a built-in 15W RMS/channel amplifier (same as most aftermarket stereos).

They're also really cheap on Ebay, like $50 or less, sometimes as low as $25. One of the sellers on there will even sell it with a plug so you can plug it straight into a Ford vehicle.

This is the same exact CD player that Ford used in the 2003 Escort ZX2...

The problem with replacing your's with the OEM CD player is that the CD player only came with the premium sound package and not many tape players came with that.

The CD player does not have in internal amp and most of the tape units did so you would end up having to do more work to fit in a OEM CD player than putting in a aftermarket CD player since you would also need to change your wiring and install the (Crappy) amp behind the glovebox.

If you already have the premium sound with the amp then ignore what I just said and contact me because I have an OEM CD player that I pulled out of my car about 3 years ago that I would be willing to get rid of cheap (the external amp is dead but the HU works fine).

If you decide to go aftermarket then I have a 3 year old pioneer HU that could go cheap also .

I dont know anything about the protege/miata unit but from what the other poster said it sounds like it might be your best choice so you can retain the stock look and feel of your contour while still getting updated electronics and an internal amp.

Well..., I don't know if it has the premium sound or not. It was good enough for me thou. I'll have to check and see. TommySVT I may be interested in the '95 AM/FM/Cassett you mentioned. I'll get back with you about that. My wife actually bought me a radio/cd for Christmas, removable face (don't want), remote (why would I want that, it's with in arm reach) and when I found out she paid over $200 for it, I made her take it back. I just can not justify putting something like that in. She almost had it installed, thank God that didn't happen as I would have been furious with her over that. I really want to just keep it simple (KISS) pull the old one, unplug it then plug in the new one and install, no re-wiring, no fuss, and I didn't want to spend very much for it. Heck when it comes down to it, the sound of the V6 is good enough, my 'stangs 302 has a better sound thou and it's sterio is a killer.

Well, Ya gave me some facts to work with and looking closer I see the speakers have a small plaque on them that states "Premium Sound", I assume that indicates that I have it. What I was really fishing for was somebody in the N. Texas area to respond so that I could just do a "plug and play" so to speak. Any takers?
