Depends, it really isn't that hard to do and is a very cheap way to pick up 2-3hp. If I had a manual tranny, I would optimize mine. I'm pretty sure someone dynoed a 2-3hp increase throughout the powerband, but you have to remember that's enough to be difference in weather between two runs...

Its a free mod and a must if you are going to be doing more intake and exhaust work. Do it.

you can do it, and as long as you don't screw anyhting up while doing it, it won't hurt anything. Just keep in mind that 2-3hp on a car like the contour isn't noticable by even the most "calibrated butt dyno's" and is within the margin of repeatability of any chassis dyno. So basically, there is no way to verify if you even got the 2-3hp from it (ie, the claims are pure speculation, regardless of any testing people have done)

The gains are 2-3 HP across the rev range, on a hotter day with more humidity compared to the "control" run, and 6-7 HP near redline. At the high revs, it is noticeable because it doesn't fall on it's face.

Once you establish a mean value, there is still natural variation around the mean. That's the 2-3 hp you're talking about, but "natural variation" means that one run it could be 2-3 hp below mean, and 2-3 hp above the mean the next time.

Just because a data point falls within the upper control limit (typically 3xSTD DEV) doesn't mean it's "natural." If the data starts falling in the upper control range, and stays there, then you have to calculate a new baseline average (mean).

Do it! I noticed that my SVT definately breathes easier above around 4.5K now. Heck, after doing my Contour, I went and optimized the TB in my '87 Escort wagon with CFI! And yes, it made a difference in the upper RPMs too! Hey, when you have a 40mm TB, you gotta take everything you can get!

Hi guys, from the UK here (www.fordmondeo.org). How do you optimise your TB?
