I have a 1999 Contour LX. Basic 4 cylinder, 2.0L, manual transmission. I know the care has a few years on it but I want to continue "hookin' it up." I have quite a few websites in my favorites to include sp motorsports. My question is; is my motor considered a Zetec before Ford actually started naming them or is it just a plain-old motor? I have "VCT" pressed on the cover. Also, is there another motor that I can use as a cross-reference for the purchase of performance parts?

Your engine is a zetec with variable cam timing. The only things changed are the exhaust gasses to make your exhaust more clean. Yes it is still considred a zetec.

May want to add CTA motorsports as another favorite, as well as e-bay.

You can look up engine parts for focus se and zx3 as well as the escort zx2. That is about all I know. Good luck.

don't know about headers. Hit up LoCo (or Hector) for the advice on his header. From what I hear you need to get rid of those splitfire plugs and just get some regular double platinum plugs. It will make your car run better.

Thanx again. I got another question. There are two wires that connect to the crankcase. One is for the speedometer and the other is the speed limiter. I was wondering if anyone knows which is which? My plan is to put a swith on the one that controls the limiter so I can turn it on or off at my discretion.

Check the Zetec section and do a search for headers. There is no header that will work on the Contour without some custom work.

Speed limiter - Get a Superchip, that will remover the limiter & offer more performance enhancements. Get the chip last so the manufacturer can program it with all your mods in mind. That'll give you best performance out of your chip.

Headers: Try this. Clicky

Enjoy!

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

So far to date there is no direct bolt on header for the Zetec Contour. Hector has a Kamakazee header from a ZX2 with a modified downpipe to match up to the Zetec exhaust routing. Kinda costly.
Focus exhausts route differently under the cars than ours, a huge pain in the butt to get to work. The Cat convertor on our cars have a different flange connecting them to the exhaust manifold than the Focus so the JBA header you see on Ebay all the time will not work without modification either.
A Super Chip may eliminate your speed limiter. There are a few of us here with chips that still bump bump at or around 112mph.
I'd start off with an intake as stated earlier from http://www.ctamotorsports.com
Then go for exhaust mods. 2.25 inch piping seems ideal for the Zetec, I'm running a used SVT Contour exhaust with dual exits on mine and couldnt be happier.
Check out the Zetec sections here on CEG for some more info.

If you need any other info shoot me a PM, I'll help you out as much as I can....

Steve

Sorry about that...Looks like you already have a Superchip. Didn't get rid of your limiter either?
