1997 Ford Contour,DuratecV6, 5-speed
I had my 97 Ford Contour in for the cat failure, and was able to get it covered under the 80,000mile warranty.
( 80,301miles) After the repairs were completed, the dealership called to inform me that my upper & lower intake gaskets are leaking. The eng light apparently came back on after they finished the cat repair, and were running additional diagnostics. I was not convinced, so I brought the car home with the eng light on. I know I have an oil leak on top of the eng, probably the valve cover gasket, so I will have to tear into this anyway. Has anyone got any info on these air intake gaskets.Has anyone had these gaskets leak? The car runs fine, but I am afraid if I do not fix the leaks, I will do some other damage? Help!

I have read the how-to, does anyone know if the fuel rail can be left intact when pulling the lower intake? Don't want to get any deeper in this that I have to... Haynes manual does not reference removing the fuel manifold, that is why I am asking.

I just left the rail attached to the LIM when I pulled mine out of my 98 a couple of weeks ago. It was, of course, necessary to disconnect the fuel line couplers (special tool).

You can remove the LIM while leaving the fuel rail attached. You have to do some wiggling and all. But the fuel line seperator tool is like $10 at NAPA...then you can remove the whole thing as a unit. I did the prior...but after having done that..would have rather done the former.

(figure that out!!!)

to just replace the gaskets you dont even need to disconnect the fuel rail you can just lift the lower up remove the old gaskets and put in the new ones

True, however you will have fun trying to properly clean both mating surfaces if you are working by yourself.

After being quoted approx 400.00 dollars at Ford, I decided to replace the UIM & LIM gaskets myself. It was also a good time to look at the valve cover gaskets & replace the spark plug wires & plugs. I did not breakdown the fuel rail, but instead, I left it attached to the LIM when I removed it. It saved on additional expense as well as time. I spent a full day, and I am happy to say that the car is running perfect. Codes P0174 & P0171 are no longer coming up. Thanks to all who provided input
