Ive toyed with this idea off and on over the years. I was thinking that it would be too hard to find a car with it since I have never seen one, until today.

I was at the j/y looking for parts for the truck, when I found some Contours. I started looking at them and found that one had traction control. If it was a Zetec car, I figure it would be pretty simple. This car was a Duratec car and I dont know if the t/c would be able to interface with my Zetec computer.

I remember a post on the old boards, someone (Dave Andrews?) had written up a large article on it. IIRC, you just plug the traction control computer into the cars computer, run the wires and your set.

I am mainly just curious, since I dont have that old article anymore, if I would just need the T/C computer/wiring/switch, or if I would need more, like tha ABS modulator.

i really do not think it can easily be done

other then switches and wiring alot else is different. one the abs controller is different IIRC, also the brake components might also be different

I beleive the TC data is contained int he computer so you would need to find one that matches your car and has the TC program

also in the pre 98 cars the TC is mechanical, you have the really long throttle cable and control motor, and it works with the abs at certain speeds

the post 98 play with the ignition to use TC

as for a duratec unit interfacing with a zetec computer that might not be an issue, I used the cruise unit from my fathers car when trying to determine if mine was shot, and it was...

Just curious as to how the traction control on these cars works?

Pretty simple, the trac control use the abs sensor to detrmine the wheels speed and to compare the speed of each wheel. When the computer see a difference of speed between the wheels, it will close the throttle body to lower power or it will stop firing.

on the early cars that is part of it, it also uses the abs system to control wheel spin, but I think that is at low speeds only but I am not sure
