I used an open end wrench. It was slow, but it worked. I think there might be enough room for a 1/4" drive deep well socket if you have one.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

use 1/4" drive ratchet & universal, short extension. remove top bolt first, this will allow you to wiggle the iac. even though you won't be able to see the bottom bolt, you should be able to feel it.
contours, deloreans & fiats, oh my!

it's a 10 mm bolt; i used a box end wrench; it gives you finer adjustments than an open end.
Also (and this will probably jinx you), DON'T DROP THE WRENCH! I did, and it turned a 10 min. job into a 30 min. one with my arm buried up to the shoulder trying to fish the wrench off the top of something i couldn't get to from underneath.
Wish i had one of those little magnetic or claw-type grabber thingies.
Peace

Not on my car, it is 8mm.
I used 1/4" drive, deep socket, on the bolts.

If I had one at the time, I would have used a deep well because there is some threaded extension on the top of the bolt for some wires to secure to. I had a regular socket available, but could not use it.

Where and what is the IAC?
I've had similar problems that gave EGR codes. We replaced the EGR finally and cleaned the throttle body...All seems well now but I want to be sure with this added maintenance to the IAC....Thanks
I drive a 2003 4WD XTERRA..My wife occasionally drives the 1995 Prestine CONTOUR.

First, if you're getting EGR codes, the IAC is likely not your problem. You should search this site for a test of the EGR valve - it was described here recently. The EGR valve is usually fine & the DPFE is a more common failure.
Now get this: The most common problem with EGR codes requires only a simple TB cleaning to resolve. Its a do-it-yourself easy task that requires the investment of $4 for a gasket, $3 for some TB cleaner, and an hour or so of time.
NOW TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION:
IAC = Idle Air Control valve It is a cylinder shaped thingy located at the rear of the Upper Intake Manifold (UIM) on the driver side. It will have and electrial connector & one 3/4" hose running to the intake accordian tube. There are two bolts that hold it in place. Upper bolt is easy to see & work with. The lower has access issues because it is close to the fire wall & some eletrical/plumbing stuff. You will usually go at that one blind.
It controls the air flow into the engine to maintain idle. Sometimes they get a bit gummed up & stick:
Closed: car won't start or will only run if the throttle is pressed slightly. Open: idle won't come down to normal level.
Occasionally, you might get an idle that hunts or surges up & down - which is usually an indicator that the IAC needs a good clean & lube.
On rare occasion, they fail.
