So I have been meaning to change the oil for a week or so now, today I finally did and wasn't too pleased with what I found. My mystique has 63000 miles on it roughly, and I have been changing my oil at about 5000 miles ever since my change to mobil 1 5w-30. This oil change was right around 5300 miles, and the oil looked very black. The thing that worries me though is that prior to changing it I checked the dipstick and it was a half a quart to a quart low, and I know I put 6 full quarts in every oil change. With the amount of miles my car has on it should I be eating that much oil, if any?

I was also wondering where I can find info on blackstone labs (the place that analyizes oil). I think I am going to go ahead and do that just to see if 5000 is a good interval or if I should shorten it a tad.

I was thinking of switching to amsoil next oil change, but now that I have discovered that it was eating oil I am kinda worried about possibly having to keep adding oil, especially since amsoil isn't exactly cheap.

Some oil consumption is not that uncommon, especially after going 5k between changes. But there are others here who say they have 0 consumption at all.

Heres the link to blackstone blackstone labs

Color is not always the best indicator as to the condition of your oil. Getting it tested is the best way to know exactly whats happening in there. Personally, with moderate driving, I would use Mobil1 for 5k, but not much over that.

BTW, what filter are you using? (please say motorcraft, mobil1 or K&N)

well I go between motorcraft and k & N. This last one was with motorcraft, but when I changed I put on a K & N. I try to use K & N all the time, but it isn't that easy to find.

You have nothing to worry about. I've had my oil tested at longer intervals than that (Mobil 1) and it came back from Blackstone with a glowing report.

Unless you drive like me...

Make your own call on oil change interval solely based on "your own" results from Blackstone.

Folks may think spending $18 to have your oil analyzed is silly or not worth it but they could NOT be further from the truth.

All it takes is for them to recommend you extend your interval 2 months/2-3k miles and you save $40 a year in oil change supplies. (or ~$22 net savings a year)

The other end of that is they recommend your to shorten your interval because the oil is expended (unlikely) or the oil has lost it's flashpoint and is high in acidic contaminants (VERY common)
That $18 advice could save you an engine... BIG $$$

On top of all that you get complete details on the wear materials and condition of your engine as well.

If you buy the kits in advance and in bulk, you can get them for $17 in the smallest amount (6 kits). If you're planning on doing this on a regular basis (and you really should) then it pays to buy a pack of kits.

You may not be burning oil, but rather leaking it. Mine Has numerous drips lately form the oil pan gasket and maybe then drain plug.
Don't worry about the oil being dark, that's more or less normal especially after 5k miles.
