I visited the Montreal Auto Show and I was disappointed.

If you remove all those shiny cars that you actually see on the streets every day, the ultra luxury (Maybach ...), the ultra high performance cars (Ferrari ...) that we see mostly in the movies and those abnormal vehicles with a restricted use - if not useless - (Hummer ...), you will be left with a few novelties that can barely fill a normal showroom!

As for Ford, let us recapitulate! We have the slightly facelifted 2005 Focus; we also have the 2005 Five Hundred which is most certainly destined to a sedantary career similar to that of the Taurus; we have the new Mustang with another "new" nostalgic retro look (nothing apparently has been learned from the Thunderbird experience); we are left with the promised Futura of which we know nothing! Oh yah, I forgot the hastely assembled for the show Shelby Cobra ... but who really cares...

Maybe we should wait until next year to see what Ford has really to offer to the car enthousiasts. That is what I already said to myself last year!!

The tbird didnt fail because how it looked; it failed because it was underpowered and cost way too much. Retro had NOTHING to do with it.

TBird failed because of power and price as stated

Mustang is very popular

500 Looks good and luxurious , dont prejudge too harshly

Shelby Cobra , hastily , are you [censored] joking? I assume you saw the show and were absolutely appaled. The powerplants been in development obviously for a while , since last summer when it was in MT at least. And the rest of it was well made. It was a CONCEPT and it RAN! good lord.

Wheres Ford going? Its going well , and it doing good things.

Just came back from the Detroit show. Ford had one hell of a set up. There was much interest in the new Mustang, and obviously in the Ford GT. From my understanding, after listening to all the verbal presentation at each car (yes I am one of the people that actually listen to them), Ford is getting ready to change everything. Similar to GM. GM just re-did everything if you haven't seen the commercials, and to my understanding they are doing well with it. My opinion, give them 2-3 years. Then things will be different. People are not buying cars like they did several years ago. More people are looking into that $30,000 price range than before (financing and such helps so much), and most of the other companies have marketed for that range (look at the new Saab, Volvo, hell even some BMWs), and I believe Ford has something in store for us all. All this from someone who used to be anti-Ford... wow, never thought I'd say that.

Follow the money. That will get your answer.

Ford is following the baby boomers to retirement - as is everybody else. Retro will continue to be the money maker for the enthusiast segment as the boomers try to relive parts of their childhood and obtain modernized copies of the dream cars of their youth. GM has been a bit slower to catch on.

The 500 will be a transition car for the boomers as Ford helps them out of their SUVs & minivans, and into more comfortable/traditional sedans. The CVT tranny is something I'm intersted to try out. If Ford makes it heavy duty enough, it'll be a great success.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I think you are being a little harsh as well. Whats wrong with a restyled focus? It rides on an exemplary platform, all it needs is a refreshening. Why do you assume that the Ford 500 is "certainly destined to a sedantary career similar to that of the Taurus"? And your criticism of the new Mustang is unfounded.

Why wait?

Somebody at Ford must have actually invented the real Flux Capacitor and installed it on some of their cars. I'm digging the retro thing to an extent, but it seems like they're using it as a crutch and are running out of new ideas. I think they should start using the Huey Lewis & the News "Back to the Future" theme song in their commercials. On a positve note, the new F150 does look very modern and nice so at least they're doing something right.
