What is the difference of not having a resonator and getting a cat back with a resonator?

well for 1, price
without the resonator it might be a little raspy, and i think it will be louder also

I'd go with the res or you will most likely get rasp.

no resonator just makes it louder thats all
its just a 2nd muffler that is removed and replaced with straight pipe

correct! i have trubenz with magnaflow and no res and my friend just put on his trubenz with borla and no rasp on either just nice and loud. although the borla seems to have a smoother sound than mine but then again it may be because i have an off road y-pipe.

Not true.
On a small displacement engine a resonator is used to eliminate drone and also helps significantly with rasp.
You can tell IMMEDIATELY a car that does not have a resonator. The words "TYPICAL RICER NOISE" come to mind.

my car had no rasp w/out resonator
maybe on a duratec but not the case with zetecs

did hectors zetec have a resonator? you wanna talk about rasp. 
maybe it had something to do with the header and no cat though or the fact that the exhaust wasnt hooked up after the header.

Some cars do however get rasp during the winter time until the car warms up. When i removed the res on my stock exhaust i had that problem but not with trubenz.
