It was on my way back from Miami. I gave turn signal when I was chaning lane on the turnpike. Normaly it makes a klick klack noise while blinking. But then it klick klacked like crazy fast, I thought the dashboard is gonna explode. And if this wouldn't had scared me up enough smoke came out just behind the steering wheel for a couple of minutes. But after a while the skoke ended, and after half a hour the noisegot away too, only coming back from time to time or always when I'm giving a turnsignal? What's goin' on in my Contour??

well the fast clicking is a way for the car to tell you that you have a light out. check out your tail lights and brake lights for that one...as for the smoke, I dunno what to tell you...

Al lighs are OK, this an't be the reason. Also the fast klicking comes from time to time and goes away again. Sometimes the klicking is even very slow.

Very likely you have a failing turn signal switch. I had similar symptoms (without the smoke) as mine was failing.

I don't think that the turn signal is wrong, it works normal. And it wouldn't explain the smoke, which is the main issue.

I suspect that the smoke came from the switch. There have been many posts about how things behave as the switch fails that you can learn about if you do a search. Your problem, less the smoke, is consistant with them.

Could also be a relay thats overloaded and clicking...possibly a short in some wiring . If you smell smoke then you have a serious problem...likely wiring somewhere. Do a good inspection of your wiring, and check the wiring under the hood closest to the firewall...maybe the smell of came into the car from the engine compartment. But in any case...something is burning, so do some carefull inspection looking for melted insulation ect.

Smoke maybe bad flasher, I believe that is inside the steering colum... or a wire shorted out in there, and made a light not work, then flasher goes faster....
